La Universidad -

Students of the Phono-audiology program of the Universty of Cauca, carried out an integral and inductive practice to commemorate the International Hearing Day.

With a day of hygiene in auditory health and a talk about the importance of early identification to prevent sensory loss, the program of Phono-audiology of the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Cauca, celebrated the International Day of Hearing. During the day they performed audiometry exams that assess the ability to hear sounds, which vary according to the volume, strength and vibration velocity of the sound waves.

“We want to make known the importance of hearing for the human being, as well as knowing how to listen, learn to be silent. This day is done based on the slogan of the World Health Organization: That hearing loss does not limit you, listen for life; We want to spread this message through different activities, including a video about how hearing works and the neurological process it performs, ”said Phono-audiology student Laura Samboní.

She said that the specialist should be consulted if there is difficulty in understanding conversations in noisy environments or if there is a need to increase the volume of television to listen well; also, when noticing the difference of hearing between the two ears, reason why audiological tests of tonal audiometry must be made, which is the assessment of the capacity to perceive the different tones; This test also evaluates the functioning of the auditory system and reveals whether the hearing is altered in the transmission of sound or in the part related to the nervous system, which helps to define the treatment to be followed.

In this activity, information of a pedagogical nature was also made available to facilitate learning and auditory health care through printed brochures on auditory and communicative assessment, for which strategies, preventive measures, and modification of habits to stop, mitigate or cure disorders of the auditory system are proposed.

The causes of hearing loss are due to different factors, including family history, ear infections, meningitis, some medicines, being exposed to loud noises for a long time or due to aging and that hearing loss constitutes the currently the most prevalent sensory disability worldwide.

In this talk about prevention and promotion of auditory health, the functionality of each part of the ear and its structures were also made known. In the auditory hygiene guidelines, it was indicated how to clean the ear, what elements should not be used to prevent hearing loss; Likewise, the services provided to the community by the speech therapy program, which will be 22 years old in September 2020 and are based on three areas: language, speech and hearing, services that benefit the community as a whole were announced .
