Graduate students from Unicauca exchange experiences with social organizations in Peru

Within the framework of the seminar "Territory and biocultural revitalization", the students of the Doctorate in Ethnobiology and Biocultural Studies developed an academic agenda in Lima and Ayacucho to understand the diverse historical-social contexts of the territory and social life from a biocultural perspective.

Students of the V cohort of the Doctorate in Ethnobiology and Biocultural Studies of the University of Cauca, participated in a pedagogical outing in Peru, within the framework of the seminar "Territory and biocultural revitalization", directed by Professor Bernardo Javier Tobar. The academic day held in the cities of Lima and Ayacucho between November 26 and December 4, 2022, sought to understand the various historical-social contexts of the territory and social life from a biocultural perspective.

In this way, he began with the presentation of the experience "Vegachayoq Moqo Wari Ayacucho Ceremonial Center in relation to the Agrofestivo Ritual Calendar" of the teacher Julio Valladolid Rivera, where the particularities of the Andean worldview, its practices, signs and secrets in the breeding of biodiversity associated with the paths of the sun and the full moon.

For its part, the Quispillaccta community developed a tour of its territory with the students of the postgraduate program of the University of Cauca. “We share the lessons associated with raising and harvesting water, a community practice that dates back to 1994 as a response to the scarcity of water resources, which thanks to the revitalization of traditional knowledge and uses of water, have managed to plant 108 lagoons that benefit to the population of four districts, recovering ecosystem functions affected by climate variability”, stated Yulieth Karina Mera Paz, PhD student in Ethnobiology and Biocultural Studies.

The binational exchange made it possible to learn about the work of the Andean Project for Rural Technologies PRATEC, a leading organization in aspects such as "the recovery and revitalization of indigenous, Andean and Amazonian knowledge, technologies and strategies for the protection of biodiversity and adaptation to climate change and for the promotion of intercultural education and Good Living”, which made it possible to find common commitments to practices of community resistance, ecosystem thinking, agroecology and intercultural education.

The day concluded with a discussion in which the archaeologist Clide María Valladolid Huaman participated, and with a visit to the Arturo Jiménez Borja-Puruchuco Museum, whose Quechua word means "feather hat", where you can appreciate the ceramics, fabrics, architecture and mausoleums of the Inca period.

The seminar "Territory and biocultural revitalization" is guided by Professor Bernardo Javier Tobar, anthropologist, specialist in university teaching, Master's in Ethnoliterature, PhD in Anthropology and full professor of the Department of Economic Sciences of the University of Cauca.
