With great satisfaction, as President of the University of Cauca, I would like to inform the general community that yesterday our Laboratory of Immunology and Molecular Biology of the Faculty of Health Sciences has the necessary permits from the National institute of health for the analysis of diagnostic tests for COVID19.

In this way, the President of the University of Cauca, José Luis Diago Franco announced the operation of the Laboratory, which will initially be able to carry out forty daily analyzes. "With this result, the University of Cauca continues to comply with the department and the country in the fight against the COVID19 pandemic, a commitment that is evidenced in leadership by the team of the Laboratory of Immunology and Molecular Biology," said the rector.

He explained that at this time the Laboratory has an installed capacity to perform the analysis on 40 samples, but if it starts from the 1,165 samples that the National Institute of Health has taken for the department of Cauca to date, it would result in a rate of 817 samples per one million inhabitants. With the operation of the laboratory, as of May 15 we would have 2,005 samples and the rate would be raised to 1,406 samples per million inhabitants.

This process is carried out as part of the inter-institutional agreement with the Government of Cauca, through which the management for the purchase of supplies and reagents that are required to continue with the analysis of the tests is proceeding, a process that depends on imports.

The Governor of Cauca, Elias Larrahondo Carabalí, thanked the University of Cauca and emphasized that it is working decisively to mitigate the effects of the coronavirus COVID19, for which he announced that emphasis will be placed on management until obtaining all the reagents required to continue doing the analysis in the Department.

"It is one of the important actions, and here we show that we are committed to our department so that COVID19 does not have so many negative effects on our communities," said the Governor of Cauca.

For her part, the Coordinator of the Laboratory of Immunology and Molecular Biology of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Gloria Inés Ávila, explained that at the moment the process is carried out manually, taking an average of 40 tests from COVID19, issuing results more quickly.

"Although the Laboratory of Immunology and Molecular Biology is ready to carry out this work, it is awaiting the reagents that are gradually arriving due to the closure of borders worldwide," he explained.

It is noteworthy that the reliability and promptness of the results of the analysis carried out by the laboratory depends on the correct taking of samples from patients by the entities authorized by the Departmental Health Secretariat.
