Magazine of the Pan American Health Organization publishes successful experience of the Alfonso López University Health Center
The "Consultorio Amigo" program began in 2008 in commune 6 of Popayán and addresses issues related to sexual and reproductive health in young people and adolescents.
The Institutional Repository for Information Exchange of the Pan American Health Organization IRIS PAHO publishes the successful experience of the Alfonso López University Health Center called "Consultorio Amigo". The program led by the teacher of the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Cauca, Ivett Adriana Herrera Zuleta; was born in 2008 in commune 6 and consists of a proposal by the Ministry of Health dedicated to the care of young people and adolescents to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, all types of violence, in addition to promoting sexual rights and reproductive and safe sex.
Even though a decade has passed since its launch, it is still a valuable program. The activities carried out not only include commune 6, but also its surroundings. The attention given to educational institutions and public and private universities in Popayán has reduced the percentage of teenage mothers from 20% in 2016 to 16% in 2018, according to data from local authorities.
The Alfonso López University Health Center, attached to the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Cauca, has been operating for 55 years. Its facilities not only provide professional health services to the community, it has also become the place of practice for students in the last semesters of that Academic Unit.
