New patent for Unicauca

La Universidad -

Through Resolution 3551, the Superintendency of Industry and Commerce delivered a new patent to the University of Cauca, aimed at the results of research on hydrolyzed protein flour from trout viscera.

The Superintendency of Industry and Commerce granted by Resolution N ° 3551 of the year 2021, to the University of Cauca the patent "METHOD OF OBTAINING HYDROLIZED PROTEIN FLOUR FROM TROUT VISCERA WITH ANTIOXIDANT AND ANTIMICROBIAL CAPACITY", presented by the researchers José Luis Hoyos Concha and Edier Gaviria Acosta.

This achievement is part of the project Alternatives for the use of by-products derived from the ALTPEZ fish farming industry, financed by the General System of Royalties SGR and executed by the Research Group on Use of Agro-industrial By-products ASUBAGROIN of the University of Cauca.

The objective of the development is to impact the agro-industrial sector, specifically in the field of animal feed, allowing to take advantage of by-products from the fish farming sector to generate raw materials with high added value.

"This patent represents the effort being made by the Research Group on Use of Agroindustrial By-products - ASUBAGROIN attached to the Faculty of Agrarian Sciences, in conjunction with the Cauca fish farmers," explained the Vice-rector for Research, Héctor Samuel Villada Castillo.

This methodology and technological adjustments implemented by the research group allowed the by-products that generated contamination to be used, taking advantage of their composition and incorporating them into animal feed. It is noteworthy that this project was extended to fish farmers in different municipalities of Cauca, in order to strengthen this fish farming sector in the department.

"This patent represents a great achievement for the communities and for the University of Cauca, with contributions in science, technology and innovation, with a positive impact on the region and hand in hand with the producers," explained the Vice-Rector for Research.

For the research professor José Luis Hoyos Concha, this is an important achievement for the university community, resulting from the project ‘Alternatives for the use of by-products derived from the fish farming industry - ALTPEZ, financed by the General System of Royalties. The patent was developed at the university and will be validated on a full scale to be transferred to fish farmers”, said the professor.

He added that the research group works for this purpose, seeking to add value to the by-products of fish farming, particularly trout viscera. As part of this project, a processing plant will be delivered to the municipality of Silvia, which will allow it to process one ton per hour, counting as raw material this hydrolyzed protein from trout by-products.

"We are doing research with a purpose, an investigation that can transcend the spaces in the laboratories, generating an impact on the productive sector, in this case on the fish farmers in Cauca," said Professor and Researcher José Luis Hoyos Concha.

With this patent, the University of Cauca has twelve, of which ten are national and two international.
