La Universidad -

The University of Cauca, led by its Social Communication program, in collaboration with the Faculty of Integrated Arts and the School of Social Communication at the University of Valle, held the Jesús Martín Barbero Chair: 2023 Encounter under the theme 'The Adventure.' This academic event took place on September 28th and 29th of the current year, held at the Francisco Lemos Arboleda auditorium and the Faculty of Law, Political and Social Sciences. Throughout these sessions, there were presentations and workshops that fostered intergenerational dialogue.

The Jesús Martín Barbero Chair has become an important space within the field of communication. One of its purposes, besides paying tribute to the academic contributions of Professor Jesús Martín Barbero, is to promote intergenerational meeting spaces to address current issues and foster dialogue from the perspectives and formative purposes of young people. Thus, one of the pioneers of this significant space, Dr. Maritza López De La Roche, stated that besides celebrating the teacher's contributions, 'It is an invitation to reading and building complex thinking, to avoid falling into oversimplification and easy interpretations of reality and the country. Instead, young people, with their energy, vitality, and intelligence, should work very hard to develop complex thinking, which is so necessary in this era of fake news.'

The event was divided into two sessions: the first consisted of a series of keynote speeches by distinguished experts in communication and culture, addressing topics aimed at engaging young people, stimulating their use of new technologies in study and analysis processes, considering social and political mobilization. It is evident that conventional media are not attractive to the new generations. During the second session, various workshops were conducted by professors dedicated to generating knowledge focused on the reality of young people, thus promoting spaces for participation that allowed for a joint analysis of social, cultural, and communicative challenges. 'The invitation is for young people to be part of the university spirit, to come together to listen to what professors are researching, to debate, converse, and take action,' expressed Miguel Tejada Sánchez, a lecturer at the School of Social Communication at the University of Valle and coordinator of the chair.

In this manner, the University of Cauca takes pride in hosting this significant academic event, reaffirming its commitment to promoting meeting spaces and reflections that contribute to the integral development of the university community and society at large. The Jesús Martín Barbero Chair continues to be a beacon of knowledge and dialogue in the region and a fundamental platform for addressing the challenges of the 21st century.
