Unicauca joins the first citywide bike ride of the year

The objective of this initiative of the Municipal Administration is to enjoy family and friends with a healthy recreation while promoting bicycle usage as a means of alternative transportation in the city.

 

The University of Cauca, within inter-institutional relationship with the Mayor's Office of Popayán, and the mission of the Vice-President’s Office of Culture and Welfare, invites the university community to participate in the 1st Big Bike Ride, to be held on Sunday 28th of May from 9:00AM.

 

On a 14-kilometer and 100-meter journey with a starting point La Salud Park and arrival at the Caldas Park, this cycling trip will have two hydration points for all riders at Bello Horizonte and the Champagnat school.

 

This initiative, which seeks to promote and encourage the use of cycling among Popayan inhabitants as a means of alternative transportation, is led by the Municipal Administration through its Secretariat of Transit and Transport, and the Secretariat of Sport and Culture, with The support of Biking Table, University of Cauca and the Transit and Transportation Section of the Popayan Metropolitan Police.

 

"The Vice-President of Culture and Welfare Office, as well as all university departments, are linked to this activity since we are jointly promoting it with the Popayán Mayor's Office bicycle use (...) this is done within the activities framework that seeks to lower carbon dioxide levels in the city, while promoting healthy habits," said Deibar René Hurtado Herrera, Vice-President of Culture and Welfare at the University of Cauca.

 

The meeting place to start is at 9:00AM, will be the Salud Park, from there it will take a north course through Carrera 5ª until the return by the 69th North Street in the Vereda Gonzalez sector. Then riders will descend on Carrera 9ª to the roundabout of the Transportation Terminal from where cyclists will take the road to the Caldas Park.

 

In addition to the use of the helmet as a protection measure, the mentioned municipal agencies recommend, among others, the following actions: right side transit at a distance of no more than one meter from sidewalks, abide traffic sign indications and the speed ​​limits, and do not stray from the cyclist group.
