Unicauca Professor of Internal Medicine department participated as an International Consultant.

Dr. Regina Victoria Plazas Rivera worked along other professionals on the evaluation of the Strategic Plan for Tuberculosis Control for indigenous communities in Paraguay.

The contribution of the Epidemiologist and professor of the institution, was possible thanks to her experience in the Tuberculosis Study Group of Cauca

The mission was led by the Pan American Health Organization, PAHO, and funded by the Global Fund to Fight HIV AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

According to Dr. Plazas, the evaluation was conducted during the second week of November had the official support of the Ministry of Social Welfare of Paraguay and PAHO.

"The final report provides recommendations and guidance on the actions of TB control in indigenous communities in order to improve the Strategic Plan for Tuberculosis Control of the country," she said.

In Paraguay, the indigenous population corresponds to about 1.8%, represented in 20 towns and 412 communities; the incidence of tuberculosis in them is ten times that of the country (34 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and 340 cases per 100,000 respectively)

The mission was led by Alfonso Tenorio, Tuberculosis advisor Subregional Andean Area of PAHO and former professor at the Alma Mater where he led research related to this disease since 1997 through the Tuberculosis Study Group of Cauca.
