Gastric cancer and cardiovascular disease were the subjects of study of the Research Group in Applied Human Genetics, Gigha.

Argentinian Cancer Society, SAC, and the American Association of Vascular Surgery and Angiology recognized the work for its contributions in research for the prevention of such diseases.

The SAC cataloged the work "Epidemiological and clinical study of gastric lesions and its relationship with Helicobacter pylori infection in a population of Cauca" as the best study for its methodological design among 40 proposals from different countries.

The recognition was given during the XVI Argentine Congress of Cancer and IX Ninth Meeting of the Federation of South American Cancer held from 7 to 9 August in Buenos Aires (Argentina)

Yexania Arboleda, a Gigha researcher said that this type of research seeks to establish the clinical and histopathological characteristics of the population to promote prevention campaigns on gastric cancer in our region and country.

"The study of 500 volunteer patients for Cauca region shows the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection and its relation to the development of preneoplastic gastric lesions and gastric cancer in a region with high incidence of this disease, especially in men," she said.

Similarly, in the XXX Latin American Congress of Angiology and Vascular Surgery, held from 25 to 28 of March in Cartagena de Indias, was awarded the job "Prevalence of peripheral arterial disease in the adult population of the department of Cauca."

Lorena Urban, Gigha researcher, noted the importance of the study conducted with 10,000 people in rural and urban areas of Cauca on cardiovascular disease since this is the leading cause of death worldwide.

"The investigation allowed the diagnosis of asymptomatic patients with cholesterol buildup in the arteries obstructing blood flow especially in the legs and, through laboratory tests, other risk factors showed such as genetic susceptibility " she explained.
