University of Cauca held a virtual discussion on mechanical ventilation in patients with COVID 19
During the conference, the invited experts discussed the realities, challenges and measures that must be taken when mechanically ventilating patients who require this type of procedure.
The Department of Anesthesiology attached to the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Cauca carried out the Virtual Conversation “Ventile bien” at COVID 19. Desperate realities, challenges and measures. The activity was carried out through the Fan Page of the University of Cauca and the official YouTube channel.
The day had the participation and contributions of William Cristancho Gómez, Physiotherapist and University Teacher; Adolfo León Tróchez Zuleta MD was Luis Alexander Peña López, Physiotherapist and Intensive Care Specialist and Moderator. Intensivist anesthesiologist, the three health professionals addressed the realities, challenges and measures that must be taken when mechanically ventilating patients with COVID 19 who require this procedure.
In addition to dealing with the technical aspects and making an analysis of the literature on the subject, the specialists proposed various alternatives in the face of the severity of this pandemic that could overwhelm the Intensive Care Units throughout the country. Given the few mechanical ventilation machines that exist, the pros and cons of it were analyzed, both the use of old ventilators and the adaptation of anesthesia machines to ventilators.
In the space it was proposed that in addition to the requirement for ventilation equipment, trained personnel are needed to deal with this situation, hence other health professionals must receive training on the subject in order to play adequate roles in the Intensive Care Units. .
The discussion addressed the concerns about the manufacture of prototypes of fans, a trend that is taking place in the world by different groups that want to contribute to the lack of these machines for mechanical ventilation. Finally, he emphasized the minimum training that health personnel must have and the protection elements that must be available when caring for patients with COVID -19.
