The University of Cauca, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) and the NGO Save the Children will participate in joint educational activities.

The University of Cauca, the Norwegian Refugee Council ( NRC) and the NGO Save the Children will be signing a cooperation agreement in the coming days.  The objectives of this agreement are to improve the quality, coverage and strengthening of the education of the population affected by displacement and victims of armed conflict in southern, west and pacific coast municipalities in the department of Cauca.

The initiative will be implemented through the project " Protection of the right to education of children and youth in southwestern Colombia.”

The agreement was reached at a meeting in which participated the rector of the University of Cauca , Dr. Juan Diego Castrillon Orrego, the Official  Officer for the program from the Norwegian Refugee Council, Enilda Jimenez and the Education Officer for the Project from the NGO Save the Children, Jonathan Schweiger .

The project aims to support the improvement of the quality, access and retention in the education system in the municipalities of El Patia , Mercaderes, Balboa , Sucre , Bolivar , Florencia, Algeria, El Tambo, Lopez de Micay, Guapi and Timbiquí as well as strengthening the capacity of educational institutions in providing this service with relevance and equity.

The project will have the support of the Ministry of Education and the Departmental Secretary of Education, to develop a methodology to seek the characterization for these municipalities and provide accompaniment to access educational opportunities. 

The University of Cauca is a strategic partner in the development of this project, by offering leadership in conducting assessments of the educational needs of the affected municipalities (situational analysis), teacher education training and humanitarian accompaniment work to care for this population.

Significantly, the three project components (access, quality and institutional strengthening) will be coordinated by the Norwegian Refugee Council and Save the Children, with financial support from the Canadian Embassy.

For component access and retention, the NRC will perform surveys in order to identify and characterize the population that is not in the education system. In addition, with the support of the SED, Flexible Educational Models (FEM) will be implemented to enable successful completion of the education of the population identified through special hours or tutoring.

On the subject of quality, Save the Children will perform a supporting and training work in strengthening the role that schools have in developing better methodologies of learning resources and abilities that avoid desertion of children and young people from educational institutions.

The Norwegian Refugee Council has developed this educational models in the departments of Nariño, Norte de Santander and Magdalena
