The University of Cauca continues to consolidate its international outreach. From September 10 to 12, 2025, Professor Sory Alexander Morales Fernández, from the Faculty of Civil Engineering (Architecture Program), presented the University of Cauca’s research advances at the XXIV International Congress on Territory and Culture, held in Jerez de La Frontera, Spain.

This event, organized by the International Network RETEC, INDESS, and the University of Cádiz, featured the University of Cauca as an allied institution. Professor Sory Alexander Morales not only presented papers, but also played a fundamental role in the academic coordination of the congress.

The central theme of this edition was “Territorialities, Habitats, and Governmentalities: Care in the Face of the Global Resource Crisis.” Accordingly, the program included keynote lectures, paper presentations, workshops, debates, research findings, and territorial actions addressing the global resource crisis beyond issues of scarcity, deterioration, or overexploitation. With thirteen symposia sessions hosting 114 papers and representing 35 universities from 20 countries across Latin America, Europe, and Africa, the aim was to situate this meeting within a broader perspective inside the complex network of environmental, cultural, historical, political, and economic factors, reflecting on care and territorial responses through the analytical connection of the categories of territory, habitat, and governmentality.

For his part, Professor Morales presented the paper entitled “Habitability, Uncertainty, and Resistance from Architecture: A Perspective on the Region and the Territories of Southwestern Colombia,” an initiative that highlights the ways in which diverse communities inhabit their spaces, emphasizing socio-spatial values as fundamental aspects of territory. He also coordinated the symposium “Territorializing Uncertainty: Expressions of Care in the Production of Habitats,” a space for exchange and debate on topics related to participatory action, public space and women, public policy, and architecture of place; outcomes that are part of the research project “ANDART-T Walking Architecture, Region, and Territory,” registered with the Vice Presidency for Research of the University of Cauca.

“I am excited to have been part of this space, because through it not only was knowledge shared and bonds strengthened, but it also contributed to the consolidation and positioning of the Architecture program at the national and international levels,” stated this member of the University of Cauca community, who at our institution serves as a professor of Urban Planning and Design and director of the ninth-semester Design Studio in the Architecture program, where projects are developed under a participatory design methodology.

Thus, from the University of Cauca, we express our pride in the work of our faculty members, who through their academic and research commitment uphold the name of the institution in international arenas, contributing to the strengthening of academic excellence and the consolidation of ties with the global scientific community. These achievements are aligned with the Institutional Development Plan “For an Excellent and Supportive University,” which in its second strategic axis recognizes education as a generator of potential and opportunities. We are deeply moved to acknowledge that, collectively and collaboratively, we continue advancing in the strengthening of the bicentennial University that we will present in 2027, with the certainty that knowledge and research are true engines of social transformation.
