Luis Alexander Peña López, a graduate of the Physiotherapy program at the University of Cauca in 2009 and a faculty member at the institution, was invited on May 28 and 29 as a speaker at the First International Congress of Critical Medicine and Intensive Care.
During the event held in Medellín, Professor Peña López delivered two presentations on Mechanical Ventilation and Extracorporeal CO₂ Removal (ECCO₂R). He was also appointed as the National Rehabilitation Representative of the Colombian Association of Critical Medicine and Intensive Care (AMCI) for the 2025–2027 term. This role involves representing professionals in physiotherapy, respiratory therapy, speech-language pathology, and occupational therapy with expertise in ICU rehabilitation, as well as leading training and research initiatives at the national level.
This professional recognition was highlighted in the most recent newsletter of the Colombian Association of Physiotherapy (ACOFI), which emphasized the role of physiotherapists in critical care settings and the institutional leadership demonstrated through the national representative position.
“Throughout my professional career, I have had the privilege of proudly representing the formative values of our alma mater, both in clinical practice and in academic and research settings. I have had the honor of serving as a faculty member in the Physiotherapy program at the University of Cauca, contributing to the training of new generations of physiotherapists. In addition, I have been a national and international speaker on topics related to mechanical ventilation, respiratory physiotherapy, and critical care rehabilitation,” stated Luis Alexander Peña López.
In this way, he has worked as a critical care specialist in the Adult Intensive Care Unit at the San José University Hospital. He has completed a Master’s degree in Educational Technologies and is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Education and Innovation, with a research focus on transforming training processes in the health sciences.
