The University of Cauca highlights the participation of civil engineer and structural specialist Yamid Andrés Girón Imbachi, who was selected to represent the country in the First Edition of the International Course “Application of the Latin American Seismic Model Code for the Updating of Building Codes or Standards,” organized by the Academia de Obras Públicas de Chile.

In this first edition of the course, only two professionals per country were selected, receiving in-person training aimed at strengthening technical capacities for updating standards and regulations for safe construction in the region.

The participation of engineer Yamid Andrés Girón Imbachi constitutes an important recognition of his professional trajectory and his commitment to seismic risk management in Colombia. It also represents a valuable opportunity to strengthen the understanding and application of the Latin American Seismic Model Code, promoting the development of safer, more modern, and more resilient infrastructure in the face of seismic phenomena affecting the department of Cauca, where seismic risk is a constant reality.

During the course, participants exchanged experiences with international experts and analyzed strategies for updating regulations in earthquake-resistant construction. In this context, the engineer emphasized the importance of reviewing and updating national standards, noting that “many constructions do not meet modern standards, and this increases the vulnerability of our communities. Having updated standards means greater safety and fewer losses in the event of a seismic occurrence; life must always come first.”

Likewise, the specialist highlighted the contributions of the Latin American Seismic Model Code, stating that this document “offers guidelines adapted to our regional reality. It is not an imposed foreign model, but rather a tool designed for countries with similar conditions, which facilitates its application and improves construction quality. In addition, it incorporates advanced technologies such as seismic isolators and dampers for priority infrastructure that must remain operational during an emergency.”

This program is part of the Kizuna II 2025 Project, within the framework of the Human Resources Training Program for Latin America and the Caribbean in Disaster Risk Reduction, funded by the Agencia Chilena de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo (AGCID) and the Agencia de Cooperación Internacional del Japón (JICA), countries widely recognized for their experience in seismic management and resilience to natural disasters.

Thus, the participation of engineer Yamid Andrés Girón Imbachi in this high-level course strengthens his professional capabilities and projects the University of Cauca as an institution committed to technical advancement in seismic risk management and regulatory updating in the region. His presence in this international setting promotes the exchange of knowledge with specialists from leading countries in earthquake-resistant engineering and provides valuable inputs to advance safer and more resilient infrastructure in Colombia and in the department of Cauca, contributing to the implementation of solutions aimed at protecting life.
