Within the framework of the Black Oak Conservation Project in the Colombian Massif and the “Aprópiate” Program of FACA, students and professors from the Forestry Engineering program visited the Palestina Educational Institution in the department of Huila.
During the visit, which took place from August 21 to 23, sessions were held to share information about the undergraduate and postgraduate programs offered by the Faculty with teachers and students from grades 10 and 11, as well as the sixth semester of the evening CLEI program at the institution.
In this way, theoretical-practical workshops were conducted with parents and sixth-grade students on the conservation of oak forests, during which participants worked on the improvement of the school’s nursery.
Finally, the commitment to the conservation of these species in the region was reaffirmed through the planting of three oak trees and the distribution of seedlings to be planted in participants’ homes.
The Applied Silviculture Research Group at the University of Cauca leads the project “Conservation and Management of Colombobalanus excelsa Forests in the Colombian Massif”, which aims to conserve and manage oak forests in the Colombian Massif.
This region, crucial for its biodiversity, faces serious challenges such as deforestation and habitat fragmentation due to agriculture, livestock farming, and illegal logging.
So far, significant progress has been made in several areas. Fourteen permanent sampling plots have been established to collect taxonomic data on trees, samples have been collected for anatomical wood observations for functional analyses, and the evaluation of the seed bank has begun.
In addition, we have started implementing community-based conservation strategies with the support of the Palestina Educational Institution, promoting environmental awareness and training the community to actively participate in the conservation of oak forests.
The “Aprópiate de la FACA” program was created in response to the demand from educational institutions in the municipalities of Cauca and other parts of Colombia that wish to learn about the facilities and academic programs offered by the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences (FACA).
This program aims to bring high school students closer to FACA through theoretical and practical activities, allowing them to explore the facilities and gain detailed knowledge about the academic programs offered.
Since the program began in the 2023-2 to 2024-1 period, it has involved 3,797 students from 35 educational institutions and has received 40 invitations to participate in university fairs nationwide.
In addition to students, the program also includes visits for administrative staff, faculty members, and students from other faculties at the University of Cauca, fostering a sense of belonging and integration.
The program also seeks to extend its reach to local and national higher education institutions, collaborating with interested organizations to promote the Faculty’s academic offerings and create opportunities for joint projects and activities.
