Gaia Research Group calls to understand the planet as a living being in order to care for and protect it

The research seedbed “Gaia, the Living Earth of the South,” which conducts its work at the Norte de Santander Campus in Quilichao, will now have a chapter in Popayán, for which it is inviting students from the University of Cauca.

In an event held at the auditorium of the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences (new campus), the Popayán chapter of “Gaia, the Living Earth of the South” was presented, a research seedbed based in Santander de Quilichao, which is affiliated with the Unicauca research group “Law, Democracy, and Society” of the Faculty of Law, Political and Social Sciences.

The mentor of the seedbed and research professor, Bárbara González Medina, points out that Gaia, besides being the primordial goddess in Greek mythology representing the Earth, is also the theory that calls us to understand the planet as a living being that must be cared for and protected. When we talk about the “living earth of the south,” it is because we conduct our studies on Human Rights, Gender, and Environmental perspectives in a transdisciplinary manner, privileging Southern epistemologies.

With this in mind, the Gaia Research Seedbed has been working for a year and a half from the North Campus of the Alma Mater Caucana, during which time they have made significant progress by carrying out research projects, producing articles for journals and books, publishing a Human Rights bulletin, raising awareness about International Women’s Day (March 8) and the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (November 25), and now presenting their Popayán chapter.

In response to the demand from Unicauca students to deepen their understanding of the topics addressed by the seedbed’s research lines, the Gaia members invite Unicauca students to join this group, where they will receive training in research and Human Rights from the perspectives mentioned above.
