During the week of November 6 to 8, Professor Miguel Ángel Niño Zambrano, affiliated with the Systems Department of the Faculty of Electronic Engineering and Telecommunications at the University of Cauca and member of the Information Technology Research Group (GTI), was invited to join a group of experts in System Dynamics who presented their research advances at the Workshop and International Seminar On Complexity Sciences (WISCS 2024), with the presentation titled “System Dynamics Model for Analysis of Demand Response on Incorporating Autoswitch in the Colombian Electrical Sector.”
The presentation is based on the results of a research project carried out in collaboration with the company ENEL COLOMBIA S.A. E.S.P., a project that explored the feasibility of Colombia transitioning to an energy portability market with an automatic switching policy for electricity providers (retailers). These results were published in June of this year in the journal Energy Policy, indexed in JCR with a 2023 Impact Factor of 9.3 – Q1 (7/600) in ECONOMICS and Q1 (23/171) in ENERGY & FUELS.
The event was organized by the nodo Colombia of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), and the Javeriana University of Cali was the host institution for this year’s edition, which has been held annually since 2019. It is distinguished by extending direct invitations to a select group of researchers recognized for their trajectory, publications, and contributions to the field of System Dynamics applied to the solution of complex societal problems such as waste management, climate change, mining, energy, recycling, sustainability, circular economy, mobility, agriculture, and CO₂ emissions, among many other topics.
Among the main universities represented by the experts who are part of the Colombia node of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics – CoSIAM were: Universidad Javeriana de Cali, Universidad del Rosario, Universidad de Antioquia, Universidad del Valle, Universidad Central, the National University of Colombia, Medellín campus, and the Autonomous University of Bucaramanga. The University of Cauca was invited to join the Colombia node in order to expand the network of experts and foster collaborative research efforts among the different universities.
Participation in the event also enabled the University of Cauca to become part of a network of experts in Systems Dynamics and, likewise, served to provide feedback on the work being carried out in this line of research by all professors and research groups, enhancing good practices, collaborations, and synergy to strengthen the discipline across undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as joint projects developed by the different universities in the country.
