Sounds that remain: With the delivery of musical instruments we strengthen arts education as a legacy and cultural heritage in Cajibío, Cauca

In southwestern Colombia, among green mountains and echoes of cultural resistance, something vibrates differently. This is how “Sounds for Peacebuilding” feels, the program of the Ministry of Cultures, Arts, and Knowledge, led in Zone 6 by the University of Cauca, which, as its name indicates, recognizes the transformative power of education and artistic practices to reconcile, heal, and build the future.

With the support of the Territorial Team of Node 6, the Ministry of Cultures, the Arts, and Knowledge delivered a set of 89 musical instruments and 15 music stands to the Carmen de Quintana Educational Institution, in the municipality of Cajibío, Cauca. Here, 216 children, youth, and adolescents, direct beneficiaries of the processes developed within the framework of this major initiative, are the protagonists of the sounds that emerge from classrooms and schoolyards, allowing hope to make its way forward like a fresh wind.

This region, where communities have been involuntary protagonists of a complex and changing war, with an elusive peace still sought on every corner, is also a cradle of cultural and social resistance. Educational institutions are not only centers of learning but also refuges, symbolic trenches, and spaces of care.

The Presidential program serves 538 children, youth, and adolescents throughout the territory of Cajibío through pedagogical processes that strengthen their artistic skills.

It is not only about teaching how to play an instrument, but about sowing sensitivity and understanding art as language, therapy, shield, and collective voice that recognizes and respects the diversity of others.

With the arrival of this set of musical instruments, the team from the University of Cauca had the opportunity to share with the educational community a space in which students from different campuses participated, along with teaching artists and knowledge keepers, administrators, teachers, the municipal secretary of education, and the territorial team of Node 6, strengthening collective purposes and leadership relationships.

From the empowerment of communities, Sounds for Peacebuilding also commits to consolidating lasting relationships, building capacities, and leaving a legacy that endures in the living fabric of the territories, rooted in the traditions and heritage of their peoples.

The vocation of the teaching artists and knowledge keepers reminds us that Cajibío, known as the “Musical Corner of Colombia,” sees how its history and its future intertwine with pasillos, dances, and bambucos. In the land that saw the birth of Efraín Orozco, a composer from Cauca and author of more than 400 musical works, Sounds for Peacebuilding promotes processes that keep cultural legacies and collective memory alive in communities where art is also inherited, honored, and defended.

The provision of instruments is an important step, but it cannot be the only one. Instruments require technical support, ongoing teacher training, and strategies for community appropriation. The Cajibío experience leaves key lessons: state and institutional commitment is possible, territorial leadership exists, and music continues to be an open door to the future. Because if this day demonstrated anything to us, it is that peace does not always arrive with helicopters or flags. Sometimes it arrives on a truck loaded with musical instruments, steps down quietly, and stays to promote possibilities for expression, identity, and spaces for coexistence.
