Southwestern Colombia welcomes Arts for Peace and the new Music School of Pitalito

With music, color, and the creative strength of the country’s south, the University of Cauca and the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Knowledge of Colombia launched in Pitalito the Program Arts for Peace – Region 2, an initiative that will transform the lives of more than 54,700 children, adolescents, and young people from 320 educational institutions, accompanied by 547 artist-educators and knowledge holders. During the event, the Minister also announced the signing of the new Arts in the Classroom Law, which makes arts education a right for all Colombians, reaffirming the power of art as an instrument of identity, encounter, and peacebuilding.

A launch that strengthens arts education in the south of the country

On November 28, Pitalito hosted the launch of the Arts for Peace – Region 2 Program, an initiative that marks a decisive step forward in equitable access to arts education in the departments of Cauca, Huila, and Nariño. The Program builds on the legacy of Sounds for Peacebuilding and expands it by integrating new areas of training: audiovisual arts, dance, theater, and creative writing.

With this expansion, Arts for Peace is consolidated as a national initiative that recognizes artistic diversity as a pathway to reconciliation, coexistence, and the strengthening of comprehensive education in the territories.

Rivers of the Arts and Cultures: a tribute to the diversity of the southwest

The Arts for Peace Program officially arrived in the departments of Cauca, Huila, and Nariño with an event bearing the University of Cauca’s distinctive mark, bringing together educational communities, artist-educators, knowledge holders, and local authorities, reaffirming that art is a pathway to heal, create, and transform territories.

Under the symbol “Rivers of the Arts and Cultures,” the University shone with a performance that paid tribute to the artistic currents flowing from different territories of southwestern Colombia and converging into a shared cultural force. Voices, songs, music, and diverse expressions came together to celebrate the cultural, ethnic, and geographic richness that unites Huila, Cauca, and Nariño.

During the formal ceremony, institutional voices that make this great river of arts and knowledge possible were heard. Claudia Triviño, director of the Arts for Peace – Region 2 Program, opened the event with a message in which she highlighted that “today we gather in Pitalito to honor a path that was already underway, woven by artist-educators, knowledge holders, principals, and families who have sustained this program with patience, sensitivity, and community principles. Region 2, Cauca, Huila, and Nariño, is a region that creates even in the face of difficulty.”

The director also extended a special message to the children and youth of the program: “To every child and young person who will play an instrument, who will write, dance, record, or represent their story, we say: in your creations lies the possibility of a more dignified tomorrow for our country. May this day remind us that we continue to believe in art as a way to care for life and cultivate peace from and for the territory.”

Professor César Alfaro, supervisor of the Program and delegate of the Rector of the University of Cauca, reaffirmed the institutional commitment to this national initiative, stating that: “The University of Cauca has always been a fundamental ally of the Government of Change and the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Knowledge of Colombia in this very important effort for peace.” He added that “we are allies and we are in love with this project, with the people, the land, and the most remote corners of Colombia, bringing music, literature, dance, theater, and visual arts. This is our commitment today and always.”

The event concluded with remarks from Minister Yanai Kadamani, who shared an inspiring message about the role of art in nation-building: “As a young artist, I believe this country can heal and must heal through art and culture, and not from a single perspective, but from the multidiversity of arts, cultures, and knowledge that our territory holds.”

A new School of Music for Pitalito

During the event, the Minister of Cultures, Arts and Knowledge officially inaugurated the new School of Music of Pitalito, an infrastructure of approximately 573 m², equipped with 12 spaces dedicated to musical practice and training. These include administrative modules, rehearsal rooms types 1, 2, and 3, a theory classroom, a production center, an audio station, an instrument storage room, a cafeteria, restrooms, a technical room, and an auditorium with capacity for 189 people and 45 musicians.

Following the inauguration, the community took part in the artistic route “Rivers of the Arts and Cultures,” a parade filled with music, dance, and performing expressions led by children, youth, artist-educators, and knowledge holders. The closing event took place at the Centro Cultural Héctor Polanía Sánchez, with the presence of local and departmental authorities, representatives of the cultural sector, and educational communities.

Historic announcement: the Arts in the Classroom Law

To close the event, the Minister announced a historic milestone: the signing of the Arts in the Classroom Law, which will guarantee the permanence and continuity of this commitment to artistic and cultural education throughout the country.

“We owe this to a leader who believes in artistic and cultural education as a right, and before leaving office, he will grant us that right, the right for all young people, children, and adolescents in this country to engage from an early age in dignified artistic and cultural education, with the instruments and spaces necessary for this training.”

Through initiatives such as Arts for Peace, the University of Cauca reaffirms its role as a strategic ally in artistic education and peacebuilding, strengthening more expressive and resilient territories where art becomes a pathway for human development, social cohesion, and the transformation of local realities.
