Thanks to the collaboration between the freestyle student collective: Training Day and the Program for the Prevention and Care of Psychoactive Substance Use and Other Addictions – Otherside, on October 28, the University of Cauca, in the Colombian capital, received a National Award from the Ministry of Health and Social Protection for being an “Entity committed to the prevention of the use, abuse, and addiction to psychoactive substances, including alcohol,” in the category of Higher Education Institutions.

Within the framework of the event “All Voices, One Network for Mental Health,” the University of Cauca was awarded, in the city of Bogotá, the 2025 National Award “Entity committed to the prevention of the use, abuse, and addiction to psychoactive substances, including alcohol,” a recognition granted by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection through the program of Law 1566 of 2012. This award highlights the institution’s work in promoting university Wellness and mental health, especially through innovative initiatives such as “Unicauca en Flow,” a space that combines urban art, freestyle, and rap with messages of self-care, coexistence, and purpose in life.

With the initiative “Unicauca en Flow,” implemented by the “Otherside” Program, under the guidance of psychologist Jorge Eduardo Vásquez, responsible for leading the coordination with the freestyle student collective known as “Training Day”, we were selected as winners. This award is the result of the teamwork of many individuals who managed to connect with the student community through words, rhymes, and art. For Vásquez, this recognition represents significant progress that contributes to the visibility of the program both within and beyond the University: “This award is very important because it allows more students to learn about and benefit from the activities we carry out. These spaces strengthen mental health, whether through therapy or through raising awareness about the consequences of psychoactive substance use. The idea is to continue growing and for the University to be recognized for this type of initiative,” he expressed with evident emotion.

For her part, Catalina Zarama, head of the Division of Comprehensive Health Management and Human Development, stated that this award reflects the spirit and dedication of a team that works every day for a healthier and more conscious University: “For the team, this national award represents recognition of the commitment and dedication with which we carry out our work, to which we put all our passion every day. Today, this is a motivation for the team; it is an achievement that encourages us to continue strengthening spaces for recreation, reflection, and student participation, where awareness and prevention are promoted through the language and expressions of young people. For the University of Cauca, it constitutes a recognition that reaffirms its commitment to mental health, Wellness, and the comprehensive education of our student community.”

Throughout 2025, “Unicauca en Flow” has held two editions: the first in May, within the framework of World No Tobacco Day, and the second in October, during Mental Health Month. In both cases, students from different faculties shared meaningful rhymes, turning rap and freestyle into vehicles for awareness, prevention, and social transformation, demonstrating that these types of spaces allow art to become a powerful tool to promote self-care and reflection on the personal and collective decisions that affect Wellness.

This important award not only recognizes a strategy, but also highlights a way of understanding university life as a comprehensive process in which academic training is intertwined with emotional care and community building; a purpose that the current administration has embraced in the fourth strategic axis of its Institutional Development Plan, “culture and Well-being as a driver of development.” In this way, the University of Cauca reaffirms its commitment to university Wellness, mental health, and the creation of protective environments where each student can fully develop their potential. With this same conviction, the next steps will focus on enhancing the talents of the University of Cauca community and strengthening new prevention strategies that consolidate spaces where creativity, participation, and empathy are at the heart of Wellness. Congratulations to each and every one of those involved! We are proud of your great work and commitment.
