The power of art at the University of Cauca: transforming lives and building peace

“The University of Cauca is, above all, a University for Peace,” states Agreement 105 of 1993, and for good reason: at this institution, we have been committed for decades to the pursuit of peace, with a significant focus on art as a mechanism to mitigate the violence experienced in our territories. For this reason, on this occasion, we highlight the work of Maestro Carlos René Ordóñez Mora, who, leading the Symphonic Band of our Alma Mater, has touched thousands of hearts through art, transforming lives and making dreams come true.

At the University of Cauca, every student, professor, graduate, and administrative staff member is like a musical note that composes a symphony of knowledge, wisdom, and experiences that, together, shape this institution, a second home for many. Through music, as a universal language, wounds are healed, stories are rebuilt, and profound feelings are expressed that would otherwise remain unspoken. For this reason, this house of thought has focused on creating meeting spaces through music, seeking to foster unity and awareness in the face of the urgent need to build alternatives to war.

Within this context, the work of Maestro Carlos René Ordóñez, as director of the Symphonic Band, is fundamental. With love and dedication, he leads this project that transforms lives and realities. In this way, various artistic expressions, along with projects, events, collaborations, and research initiatives, play an essential role in our Alma Mater’s commitment to peacebuilding.

Today, through this text, we invite you to learn more about Maestro Carlos René, who, originally from La Cruz (Nariño), began his musical journey at the age of eight by forming traditional Colombian music ensembles. Guided by his early talents, he later decided to pursue studies at our University, graduating in 1999 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music, earning a meritorious thesis distinction, impressive, isn’t it? He continued his training at the Juan N. Corpas University Foundation in Bogotá, obtaining in 2005 a specialization in Orchestral Conducting, once again with honors. In 2018, he received his Master’s Degree in Music from the University of Cauca. He has composed nearly forty works that express his love for Colombia and his vision of hope.

Since 2005, he has been a professor at our Faculty of Arts and has directed the University’s Symphonic Band, which has performed on major national and international stages. Maestro Carlos René has received multiple distinctions, including the Bicentennial Medal and the title of Eminent Professor. He has also stood out as a judge in national competitions and as a guest conductor for renowned bands and orchestras across Colombia.

“Experiencing the University as a student, as a graduate, as a teacher, and as an administrator has allowed me to feel the importance of the educational process, to passionately enjoy music, and to vibrate with all my strength when we sing the anthem of the University of Cauca while watching those blue and red stripes wave, stripes that represent us today, have represented us in the past, and will continue to lead the future of our region,” expressed Professor Carlos René, offering an emotional reflection on his journey through our Alma Mater. It is a path that serves as a tangible example for the students who, semester after semester, are being trained as professionals in different fields of knowledge, yet share the same conviction: to contribute to building a more just and equitable society.
