The research Group in Catálisis of University of Cauca participated in the XIV Colombian Symposium on catálisis with innovative proposals in sustainable innovation

The Catálisis Research Group of the University of Cauca participated in the XIV Colombian Symposium on Catalysis, an event held in the city of Pasto from October 7 to 10, 2025, where they presented five papers focused on scientific advances and the exploration of new pathways for transforming agro-industrial waste into value-added materials. Three of these works were led by undergraduate thesis students in Chemistry who are currently conducting research in different areas of catalysis.

The XIV Colombian Symposium on Catálisis (XIV-SiCCat) is a forum for the dissemination of scientific knowledge, the exchange of research experiences, and the creation of strategic alliances aimed at addressing challenges and seizing short- and medium-term opportunities in the field of catalysis, within a context marked by enormous social, technological, and environmental challenges.

During the event, Professors Cristian David Miranda and Alfonso Ramírez, together with students Karol Melisa Muñoz, Sergio Sanchez, and Daniel Gonzalez Gutiérrez from the Chemistry program, presented five projects that integrate topics such as the circular economy, waste and its transformation into raw materials, and green oxidation processes. Among them, notable highlights included the production of carbon quantum dots from sugarcane bagasse, the development of graphene oxide catalysts for reactions using sustainable solvents, and the use of photocatalysis to degrade microplastics.

Professor Alfonso Ramírez, member and researcher of the group, highlighted that Catálisis is a key tool for connecting science and sustainability: “These processes allow us to transform molecules and make use of waste materials, such as coffee husks or coconut fiber, with the aim of creating useful materials. What was once waste is now turned into a resource with a positive environmental impact,” he explained.

“The Catálisis Research Group has been doing things well,” affirmed Professor Cristian Miranda Muñoz, who presented graphene oxide–based catalysts oriented toward more sustainable processes. Cristian emphasized that participation in the symposium makes it possible to contextualize national advances, showcase the quality of the research group’s work, and generate networks for research stays and international collaboration. His central idea is that the recognition obtained reflects the group’s growth and consolidation at the national level. Likewise, Professor Cristian underscored that the Catálisis research group is strengthening its position as a national benchmark in applied research, including the use of Machine Learning to optimize reaction conditions and reinforce its commitment to sustainable chemistry and waste valorization. The group’s disciplinary diversity, Chemistry, Agroindustrial Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Physics, and Biology, facilitates comprehensive approaches to the environmental and technological challenges addressed by its students.

In this regard, Daniel González Gutiérrez, an undergraduate student currently working on his thesis under the supervision of Professor Johnny Vilar in the field of electrocatalysis, stated, “The main idea is to add value to these biomasses,” referring to his research on carbon quantum dots derived from sugarcane bagasse. For him, the Symposium was a formative experience, as it included the Colombian School of Catalysis, with master lectures delivered by national and international experts, allowing him to receive recommendations from specialists, learn about characterization methodologies, and connect with international researchers who contributed practical solutions to experimental challenges.

Likewise, it is important to highlight the appointment of Professor Cristian David Miranda Muñoz as Secretary of the Colombian Society of Catálisis for the 2025–2027 term, an achievement that recognizes the research group’s consistent work and projects the institution toward new opportunities for scientific collaboration. For these reasons, from this house of thought we congratulate the participating professors and students for the quality of their presentations and reaffirm the commitment of the University of Cauca to create and sustain spaces for research and innovation that promote sustainable solutions and the education of highly qualified professionals.
