Unicauca receives 3,000 million pesos from the Ministry of National Education to strengthen the campus of The Alma Mater of Cauca in Santander de Quilichao

Thanks to the coordinated work between the Office of Planning and Institutional Development, the Center for Regionalization, and various university departments, Unicauca secured a historic investment that will improve the infrastructure of the campus located in the northern part of the department, in the municipality of Santander de Quilichao, thereby reaffirming its commitment to academic excellence, solidarity, and the transformation of lives through higher education.

With a clear vision toward excellence and the social transformation of ever more young people, the University of Cauca celebrates today a milestone of great significance: the approval of 3 billion pesos in funding by the Ministry of National Education. These resources, allocated to the modernization and comprehensive improvement of the physical infrastructure of The Alma Mater of Cauca campus located in Santander de Quilichao, project this space as an epicenter of academic and human development.

This achievement, the result of tireless work and strategic coordination between the Office of Planning and Institutional Development and the Regionalization Center, since this process is also framed within actions aimed at expanding coverage and ensuring student retention, along with the support of various university departments, represents the materialization of a profound commitment to our university community. Its purpose is to positively impact lives through high-quality higher education and to strengthen the sense of belonging among the members of the University of Cauca, our most valuable heritage.

In this regard, the University’s Rector, Dr. Deibar René Hurtado Herrera, stated: “With profound joy, we have received the good news of the allocation of 3 billion pesos by the Ministry of National Education for the northern campus. These resources will allow us to continue consolidating our presence in northern Cauca, improving the conditions we have at the Santander de Quilichao campus in academic and research terms, as well as in outreach initiatives and the well-being conditions required to carry out our educational mission. It has been a long journey in securing these resources, and I am grateful to the individuals who have helped make this possible. We will use these funds in the best possible way for the projects we have submitted to the Ministry, which are essential to our work in Santander de Quilichao.”

The process that today results in this positive news began in September 2024, when the Office of Planning and Institutional Development decisively took on the challenge of meeting all the requirements established by the Ministry of National Education to access its funding sources. This meticulous process included the commissioning and execution of essential technical studies, such as the Soil Study for the northern campus, the CBR (California Bearing Ratio) analysis for pavement design, and the traffic study, as well as the architectural, structural, and budget designs, together with their respective technical annexes. Every detail, handled with precision and dedication, was developed with the unwavering support of the entire team of this department of the University of Cauca.

The project moved forward with the acquisition of the construction license from the Municipal Planning Office of Santander de Quilichao, as well as the certification of the Superior Council, which frames it within the Institutional Development Plan “For an Excellent and Supportive University,” under its fifth strategic axis, “Modernization of Administrative and Functional Processes.” With all these requirements in order, the proposal was submitted to the Executive Committee, then to the Superior Council, and finally to the Ministry of National Education, which made it possible to secure the resources that will soon arrive to transform the spaces of this campus in the northern part of the department.

Regarding this achievement, Andrés Felipe Rivera Fierro, head of the Office of Planning and Institutional Development, stated: “It has been a demanding and lengthy process, but the planning office has remained committed to responding to each of the Ministry’s requirements. We have worked in coordination with the Administrative Vice Presidency and other departments, and thanks to this, we expect to move forward quickly with the contracting and execution of the project. This funding is proof that teamwork makes it possible to achieve great results for the University and for our students.”

Thus, the investment of 3 billion pesos reflects, as previously noted, not only compliance with the fifth strategic axis of the current Institutional Development Plan, focused on the modernization of administrative and functional processes (particularly institutional infrastructure), but also demonstrates the commitment of the University of Cauca to providing more modern and comfortable spaces for learning. In this regard, the goal is to offer students an increasingly welcoming campus equipped with everything necessary to enhance the capacities of these new generations of members of the University of Cauca. Finally, it would be impossible not to mention that this effort is also connected to the Bicentennial cross-cutting axis, as the University prepares to celebrate its 200 years with a renewed vision and the firm decision to deliver a strengthened institution in constant transformation, a goal that will be made possible thanks to the Ministry of National Education. In this way, every action becomes a driving force to continue building a University of excellence, solidarity, and profound commitment to the future of Cauca and the country.

From this house that is #HeritageOfAll, and with this investment, the campus in the municipality of Santander de Quilichao, especially benefiting the inhabitants of the northern part of the department, is projected as a space for academic and human development that will continue fulfilling the noble mission of transforming lives and making the dreams of thousands of students come true, all within the framework of high-quality public education at the service of society. Without a doubt, this historic investment will enhance the Northern Campus in Santander de Quilichao, reaffirming the commitment to life and to education.
