University of Cauca Students build bridges for dialogue with the women of the Ancestral Indigenous Council of Rioblanco

The members of the Philosophy program promoted research collaboration and social outreach links between the University of Cauca and the need to encourage community work through comprehensive, civic, and socially responsible education.

Last Friday, May 16, a group of students and professors from the Department of Philosophy of the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences, belonging to the study group Readers and Readings of Modern Philosophy, organized, planned, and carried out a dialogical workshop with a group of women from the ancestral territory of Rioblanco (Sotará, Cauca).

The objectives were aimed, on the one hand, at building ties for research work and social outreach between the University of Cauca, particularly with students from the Philosophy program, and the Ancestral Indigenous Council of Rioblanco; and, on the other hand, at fostering the community engagement of Unicaucanos through comprehensive, civic-minded, and socially responsible education.

In the workshop, titled “Rioblanco Women: Territory, Chagra, Seeds, and Governance,” students and participating women from the territory engaged in conversations about the leading role of women within the Rioblanco community.

There, it was presented how the understanding of territory has shaped social struggle; likewise, the cultural appropriation of the chagra and the multiple meanings of seeds within the community were internalized.

The dialogical exercise ultimately allowed participants to question the importance of identity and the power of governance led by women.

Professors Pedro Silva and Yerson Carrillo Ardila indicated that this exercise brings students closer to recognizing that theoretical work, while important within the tradition and formative processes in philosophy, is not the only path that can be explored within the University.

“The projection of this workshop lies on the horizon of formulating a research project that results in the social appropriation of knowledge and in actively strengthening the bridges between academia and civil society,” concluded Professor Carrillo.
