University Cultural Agenda with a Territorial Approach Project

For the current Institutional Development Plan (IDP), this project constitutes a broad organizational framework for the Division of Cultural Management’s core areas of work. Through the cultural agenda, spaces for gathering, knowledge exchange, and relationships are consolidated around the University’s artistic and cultural development, strengthening initiatives and networks that foster a sense of belonging and shared ways of thinking among members of the University community as cultural beings.

Accordingly, this project is founded on two major subprojects that bring together the guiding approaches and strengths for the organization of this cultural agenda.

EN-RED-ARTE, Knowledge Dialogue with the Territories Project 2023–2027

Speaking of En-Red-Arte within the current Institutional Development Plan (IDP) means building through knowledge dialogues with and for the territories. Accordingly, this intercultural project seeks to foster spaces for dialogue with individuals and communities throughout the Department of Cauca by promoting exchanges that enable the sharing of knowledge, cultural expressions, and reflections on the collective memory of peoples, their traditions, and their relationship with the territory.

Likewise, it seeks to create synergies with the ethnic and cultural communities organized within the University of Cauca, including the Palenque, the University Cabildo, and the University’s peasant organizations. Accordingly, this is a process that encompasses the open and respectful exchange of views among individuals and groups with different ethnic, cultural, religious, and linguistic traditions and backgrounds, in a spirit of mutual understanding and respect. As its name suggests, it is about cultural interaction through dialogue among individuals as social beings in a continuous process of development over time.

Strengthen human connections and social networks through the recognition of others by fostering knowledge dialogue as a means of shaping collective and individual memories, while highlighting cultural diversity within the University and beyond.

Project Lines of Action

The lines of action envisioned for this project are framed within an ethnographic approach, as they involve fieldwork in which close engagement with the community, the interpretation of its meanings and ways of life, and the analysis of its social and cultural structures play a central role.

Accordingly, the active participation of both the community and the Division of Cultural Management is essential for carrying out the knowledge dialogue gatherings and achieving the proposed objectives. With this in mind, an intercultural dialogue agenda will be developed to coordinate all partner organizations in defining the actions and processes to be undertaken. This agenda will be disseminated through various communication channels using graphic materials that will be shared on an ongoing basis.

The development of this agenda will be carried out as follows: Phase 1: Introductory meetings with the community, with the aim of identifying the target populations and establishing the working committees. Phase 2: Development of the agendas, scheduling of the knowledge dialogue meetings, and management of resources and administrative procedures. Phase 3: Implementation of the intercultural dialogues with the communities and preparation of proceedings.

Cauca Territorio Libro

Cauca Territorio Libro is a project organized by the University of Cauca and the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) of the region, with the support of territorial authorities. It creates a space in which the book serves as the central organizing and visible element within cultural processes, constituting the project’s primary guiding concept and the foundation of its work. Accordingly, establishing this initiative initially in the cities of Popayán and Santander de Quilichao, and subsequently expanding it to the other territories of the Department of Cauca, makes it possible to organize reading and writing mediation activities that connect and focus the territory through narratives rooted in and supported by its communities. A second guiding concept is the circulation of books; it is important to emphasize how each source enriches knowledge and, in doing so, contributes to the construction of understanding.

From this perspective, Popayán Ciudad Libro promotes a rich cultural environment through its activities and invited participants, showcasing an organic cultural ecosystem firmly grounded in the fundamental principles of literary practice and knowledge. A third guiding concept is the redefinition of what it means to read and write, especially among younger generations, in which the use of electronic devices has become the basis of everyday communication and, in many of these settings, books have gradually lost their place. For this reason, the Ciudades Libro initiative was created, including Popayán Ciudad Libro, Quilichao Ciudad Libro, Timbiquí Ciudad Libro, and Puerto Tejada Ciudad Libro, establishing an ongoing route through which books are perceived from different perspectives and where reading, together with its many imaginative ways of understanding, becomes a diverse language of appreciation and storytelling in imagined worlds.

Strengthen reading and writing habits and promote the use of books as a cultural resource among citizens and the academic community of the Department of Cauca, including university, school, and secondary school students and teachers from both public and private institutions in urban and rural areas.

Project Lines of Action

The stages of Cauca Territorio Libro are part of the different processes that are systematically organized to ensure the project’s implementation. Accordingly, the following lines of action are established:

1. The first stage consists of organizing a committee that leads and guides the entire project. From this operational structure, the project’s administrative, academic, cultural, and logistical guidelines and core frameworks are developed. This committee remains active throughout the year, providing clear direction for the overall management of the project.

2. The second stage consists of organizing a cultural agenda. This step structures what has been designated as the pre-fair, which includes a variety of reading and writing mediation activities that strengthen the territories through knowledge dialogue and knowledge-building processes.

This stage makes it possible to design all educational activities, including literary and oral creative laboratories, training workshops, and new approaches to educational and artistic development.

3. The third stage is the main event, organized around a structured literary agenda that promotes the ideas of writers through book launches, recitals, and literary and cultural education activities. The event features an extensive book exhibition and book donation initiatives for selected communities.

4. Communication processes are integrated throughout the entire project. The creation of websites and, in some cases, the management of virtual communication and dissemination platforms, together with the use of different media, foster the appropriation of the project’s content. The process concludes with the analysis, evaluation, and documentation of all impact indicators generated through the activities, which are presented and recorded in the final project reports.

Art and Alterity

The Art & Alterity International Seminar is a major academic and research event that, since 2018, has brought together distinguished artists, researchers, and experts in the fields of art and culture to address topics such as research-creation, powers and potentialities, becoming-woman, and art as play. Through this enriching gathering, the relationship between art and alterity is explored, with a particular focus on how artistic practices can contribute to building a more just and equitable society. Alterity, understood as the recognition and appreciation of human diversity, is a central theme of the seminar. Through art, the seminar seeks to move beyond differences and stereotypes, encouraging diverse perspectives grounded in respect and empathy for other realities and ways of seeing the world.

One of its objectives is to establish internationally recognized academic gathering spaces and develop strategic mechanisms for critical thinking and the strengthening of artistic practices at the University of Cauca. It also seeks to promote a critical perspective among the different sectors of the University community regarding processes of political, social, and institutional reconciliation among different population groups at the national and regional levels through lectures and conference presentations.

The Art & Alterity International Seminar is an open window to understanding the intersection of art, alterity, and peacebuilding. It recognizes art as a vehicle for expressing experiences, denouncing injustice, building collective memory, and questioning reality in contexts of conflict and post-conflict. This event fosters an inclusive and participatory space where attendees have the opportunity to enrich their knowledge through the experiences and expertise of nationally and internationally recognized guests, with the aim of encouraging research and the exchange of artistic processes related to peacebuilding and collective memory.

It also creates opportunities for artists in training and graduates to contribute ethical and aesthetic perspectives to peacebuilding processes through workshops and discussion forums.
