X Afro-Colombian Chair Rogerio Velásquez Murillo. Collective claims, knowledge production and peacebuilding

May 23 to 24, 2024

Place: Francisco José de Caldas Auditorium – Main Auditorium of the Alternate Campus of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

Time: 8:00 a.m.

In 1948, the young man from Chocó, Rogerio Velásquez Murillo, graduated from the Ethnological Institute of the University of Cauca, becoming a pioneer in the study of the popular cultures of the Colombian Pacific. In 2014, the first Afro-Colombian University Chair was created with the purpose of recovering his work, intellectual legacy, and figure for new generations.

Through the Center for Ethnic Memories, the Department of Intercultural Studies, and the Comprehensive Socio-Humanistic Education Component -FISH- of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, we have cultivated this process in two modalities: community-based and curricular. Since 2015, six Afro-Colombian Chair courses have been offered as part of the FISH curricular program for undergraduate students at the University of Cauca campuses in Popayán and Santander de Quilichao.

Over these ten years, more than two thousand students from different undergraduate programs have participated in the Afro-Colombian Chair, learning about the contributions and lessons of African heritage in our country. More than fifteen hundred people from diverse communities in the region, the country, and the continent have taken part in the annual event held in Popayán, Santander de Quilichao, Suárez, and Timbiquí.

The event will take place on May 23 and 24, 2024, at the Francisco José de Caldas Auditorium and the Main Auditorium of the Alternate Campus of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
