The History Program is part of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Cauca, and was created by Agreement 010, March 20, 2001, issued by the Supreme Council.

Since its inception, breaking the Colombian university tradition of making history from a privilege field of teaching practice, the academic program focused on training conceived in an interdisciplinary nature, with a flexible character, and an incorporation of audiovisual languages, alternative that extends the range of scenarios for the publication of historical knowledge.

Similarly, for creating this program, the History Program took into account that the constitutional statements encountered with the Carta Magna of 1991, in which Colombia is understood as a multiethnic and multicultural society put historiographical paradigms in crisis by which, until late twentieth century, has built the base of the Colombian nation, according to the 1886 Constitution, as unitary and Catholic.

In this sense, the foundation of that career was an intellectual challenge for both teachers assigned to the Department of History, as for teachers of other academic units of the institution. It was also a challenge to the University of Cauca as this institution came into play its prestige to open an undergraduate program with characteristics different from those that are regularly offered and had to adequate the rules and resources to make possible its openness and support.

By order issued by the Ministry of Education, was awarded the Qualified Register this Academic Program of the University of Cauca.
