Asociación Colombiana de Medicina Crítica y Cuidado Intensivo makes a recognition of the professional practice of a Unicaucano graduate
Luis Alexander Peña López, alumnus and professor at the University of Cauca, has been appointed National Representative for Rehabilitation of the Colombian Association of Critical Care Medicine (AMCI).
Luis Alexander Peña López, who graduated from the Physiotherapy Program at the University of Cauca in 2009 and currently serves as a faculty member at the institution, was invited as a speaker at the First International Congress on Critical Care Medicine, held on May 28 and 29 in the city of Medellín.
During the event, Professor Peña López delivered two presentations on Mechanical Ventilation and Extracorporeal Carbon Dioxide Removal (ECCO₂R). He was also officially appointed National Representative for Rehabilitation of the Colombian Association of Critical Care Medicine (AMCI) for the 2025–2027 term. This position involves representing physiotherapists, respiratory therapists, speech-language pathologists, and occupational therapists with expertise in ICU rehabilitation, as well as leading national training and research initiatives in this field.
This professional recognition was highlighted in the latest newsletter of the Colombian Association of Physiotherapy (ACOFI), which emphasized the vital role of physiotherapists in critical care settings and institutional leadership through this national representative role.

I have had the honor of being a professor in the Physiotherapy Program at the University of Cauca, contributing to the education of new generations of physiotherapists. I’ve also been a national and international speaker on topics such as mechanical ventilation, respiratory physiotherapy, and rehabilitation in critical care,” stated Luis Alexander Peña López.
Professor Peña López currently serves as a critical care specialist in the Adult Intensive Care Unit at the San José University Hospital. He has completed a Master’s degree in Educational Technologies and is currently pursuing a PhD in Education and Innovation, with a research focus on transforming educational processes in the health sciences.
