Unicauca research group joins the global campaign for gender equality in science

The Department of Chemistry and the Catalysis research group participated in this world event that under the slogan "Breaking Barriers in Science" recognized the contribution that women make in research.

The University of Cauca, through the Catalysis research group and the Department of Chemistry, joined the initiative of the IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry), where, through meetings around the world, they sought to establish a network of people of all genders to fight against the barriers that gender equality has had in science.

“We join this international initiative that aims to promote and highlight the work carried out by women in science, in order to break barriers of discrimination,” said Alfonso Enrique Ramírez Sanabria, Director of the Catalysis Research group.

It should be noted that this is the second time in a row that the Research Group is part of this global initiative that in 2022 had the participation of more than 30,000 people in 400 breakfasts held in 75 countries around the world.

With this objective, an event was held on February 14, 2023 where through a global women's breakfast (GWB2023) and the motto "Breaking Barriers in Science" convened from secondary schools to recognized scientific societies, universities, companies, governments and non-governmental organizations.

GWB 2023 was emblematic of the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development because it brought together people from all scientific disciplines in a space that celebrated the United Nations Day of Women and Girls in Science and that seeks to establish a active network of people of all genders to ensure gender equality in science.

The University of Cauca and the Colombian Society of Chemical Sciences, with its headquarters in Bogotá, were the only Colombian Institutions that participated this year. In this way, the Catalysis Research group recognizes and exalts the contribution that women make in the research work within the seedbed and the research group.
