Unicauca students and teachers carry out academic work on the decriminalization of abortion

La Universidad -

Through research, inquiries and legal concepts, a group of university students from the Faculty of Law, Political and Social Sciences carried out an academic work on the decriminalization of abortion in Colombia.

With the purpose of knowing the points of view that the debates on the decriminalization or not of abortion have brought with them, a group of students with the accompaniment of the teacher and Judge Jesús Alberto Gómez Gómez of the Faculty of Law, Political and Social Sciences of the University of Cauca carried out a research work within this Academic Unit regarding the decriminalization of abortion.

This work focuses on knowing the concepts, criteria, visions, that those close to law have, in this case teachers and students of the same program, on this issue that has generated different reactions in the country. “It is no secret to anyone that the decriminalization of abortion has been the subject of various debates both in the legislative and in the cultural, social and religious spheres of our society. While on the one hand it seeks to protect the right to life of a being that is on its way, on the other it seeks to defend the right to free reproduction of women ”, indicated the students.

According to the current situation, in Colombia abortion is allowed under three grounds: first, that the fetus comes with a malformation; second, that the pregnancy puts the mother's physical and mental health at risk, and third, that the pregnancy is the product of rape. This is stipulated in ruling C-355 of 2006. Although this has decreased the number of unwanted pregnancies and clandestine abortions, it is not a complete solution to the problem that afflicts us today.

In recent years, the highest number of deaths from clandestine abortion practices occurred in women between the ages of 16 and 25, who say they do not feel capable of carrying a pregnancy and later motherhood. One of the initiatives that led to this work is the high number of women who have died from unsafe abortions.

In this context, and being aware of the problem, the following question was posed: What percentage of approval has abortion in relation to the age and university level of the people? “A survey of 169 people was conducted, results that show discontent towards ruling C-355 on the three causes of abortion, considering that this is not a pertinent solution to the problem; followed by this, it was also observed that, for the most part, women are in favor of the decriminalization of abortion since they consider it a matter that fully concerns them, "said the group of university students from the Faculty of Law, Political and Social Sciences.
