The University of Cauca Celebrated 197 Years of a Symphony Dedicated to Higher Education

La Universidad -

The Alma Mater of Cauca commemorated its 197th anniversary with an event filled with symbolism and recognition. This celebration paid tribute to its founders, highlighted the value of its community as its most precious asset, and inaugurated the exhibition "University of Cauca: Path to the Bicentennial." Additionally, the institution received a special gift: the renewal of its anthem’s sound, one of its most emblematic symbols. The event took place on December 19 at the Paraninfo Francisco José de Caldas and the Casa Museo Mosquera.

The 197th-anniversary celebration of the University of Cauca began with the singing of the National Anthem, a moment dedicated to honoring Francisco de Paula Santander and later Simón Bolívar, the founders of the institution. They were accompanied by members of the University’s Superior Council, led by its president, Dr. Rubén Darío Moreno Martínez, as well as representatives from other educational and governmental institutions.

During the tribute to Simón Bolívar, an amateur choir, which had been diligently preparing in the days leading up to the event, performed the Alma Mater’s anthem with a fresh sound. This new arrangement incorporated traditional rhythms from the department of Cauca, such as marimba and chirimía.

This musical adaptation paid homage to the territory to which the University belongs, reinforcing its commitment to the region and its ongoing efforts to contribute to peacebuilding within its communities.

For this reason, students, administrators, faculty, alumni, and university leaders came together in this symbolic moment to collectively sing an anthem that has accompanied countless generations of graduates—now revitalized with the rhythms of southwestern Colombia.

Following this, in the emblematic Paraninfo Francisco José de Caldas, Rector Deibar René Hurtado Herrera delivered an emotional welcome speech.

In his address, he movingly emphasized the importance of the human symphony that brings the University of Cauca to life. This symphony is composed of every student, professor, administrator, and alumnus, each contributing their uniqueness to create the distinct melody that defines this institution.

"This interpretation does not mean that we all play at the same time, nor that we all play the same instruments, the same score, or even that we all play at all. Some of us may sing, some may conduct, some may arrange. A melody is the combination of actions and emotions to create a beautiful sound—just as this marvelous anthem has done for the University of Cauca today."

Undoubtedly, these words, along with the anthem’s new sound, will resonate across Cauca, reminding everyone of the university community’s fundamental role in building a more just and united society. Like a great orchestra, the Unicaucano seal transcends borders, reaching not only the heart of Cauca but also the farthest corners of the world, leaving an indelible mark of knowledge, culture, and commitment.

At this institution, people are the most valuable heritage—the soul that drives the symphony of higher education each day. Thus, following Rector Deibar René Hurtado Herrera’s moving words, a moment filled with gratitude and pride unfolded: honors were awarded to those who have dedicated over 40 years of their lives to strengthening this institution.

A heartfelt tribute was also paid to members of the university community who, through various disciplines, have proudly represented the blue and red colors of our Alma Mater, upholding its name and legacy. To conclude, academic excellence was celebrated, recognizing programs that earned High-Quality Accreditation over the past year, as well as those marking 25 and 30 years of academic journey, solidifying their status as benchmarks of excellence. Undoubtedly, this event served as a powerful reminder of the collective impact and the lasting impressions left by each individual in this grand symphony known as the University of Cauca.

Following this emotional moment—which moved many attendees to tears—the celebration continued at the historic Casa Museo Mosquera. There, the exhibition "University of Cauca: Path to the Bicentennial" was inaugurated, presenting a fascinating timeline that captures the most significant milestones of this emblematic institution. This historical journey, rich in memory and pride, invites reflection on nearly 200 years of dedication to education, culture, and progress, while bringing us closer to the dream of commemorating the Bicentennial.

Thus, on Thursday, November 19, the Alma Mater of Cauca filled the historic sector of Popayán with life and emotion, resonating with the symphony of its people. The 197th anniversary of this institution—one that, through higher education, transforms lives, turns dreams into reality, and stands as a collective heritage—could not be any less grand. This milestone is not only a reminder of the University’s vital contributions to southwestern Colombia and the nation but also a reaffirmation of its commitment to a future filled with hope and opportunities for generations to come.
