#EnClaveBicentenario: a flame that recognizes the excellence and commitment of the members of the University of Cauca to transforming lives

In a moment of deep celebration and pride, the University of Cauca has, for the past three years, kept alight a flame that symbolizes recognition for those who, with dedication and passion, have left an indelible mark on this house of thought. Thus, within the framework of the #EnClaveBicentenario campaign, we once again highlight these recognitions, which not only celebrate the institution, but also the lives, stories, and efforts of each member of our community, because through their achievements, they have helped weave a legacy that transcends generations. Since 2023, these recognitions have not focused on celebrating the institution itself, but rather the people and processes that, through merits previously acknowledged at the regional, national, or international level, have contributed to enhancing the University’s name and projecting it into the future.

The year 2025 was especially fruitful for the University of Cauca, why? It was a year of abundant harvests, of constant work, and of achievements that reaffirm the pride of belonging to a diverse, talented academic community committed to social transformation. Professors, students, administrative staff, academic programs, and faculties received external recognitions that today allow us to understand that the impact of the University’s work goes beyond our classrooms, hallways, and laboratories. Each award obtained during the year that is now coming to an end reflects a vibrant University, one that engages with its environment and contributes knowledge, culture, sports, innovation, and hope.

In this context, the university leadership granted a total of 56 recognitions, a figure that in itself speaks to the magnitude of this great harvest. Two of these were awarded to individuals with more than 40 years of service, whose trajectories represent memory, perseverance, and vocation, supporting that promise of the current Institutional Development Plan, according to which “our people are the most valuable asset.” Additionally, four special mentions highlighted significant contributions to the construction of the University from different areas of institutional work.

Twenty-nine recognitions honored students and faculty members who, throughout the year, obtained relevant awards and distinctions. Likewise, one academic program was recognized for achieving high-quality accreditation, three faculties celebrated their institutional anniversaries, and seventeen academic programs were acknowledged for reaching 25, 30, 50 years and other five-year milestones that became landmarks during 2025. Ultimately, this is a sum of achievements that confirms that when one sows with commitment, tangible results become visible.

Thus, more than a symbolic act, these recognitions carry a profound meaning for the University of Cauca community. The flame that represents them alludes to the coat of arms of the University of Cauca and to its motto: Quien ha de morir deje su luz a la posteridad (Posteris lumen moriturus edat). This unique artistic piece, created by the artist María Stella Perafán, has been institutionalized since 2023 through its annual presentation as a gesture of gratitude and remembrance, recalling that the true university legacy is built through actions that illuminate the path of those who will come after.

In this regard, Rector Deibar René Hurtado Herrera highlighted that this gesture is fundamental to strengthening the sense of belonging to this house that is #HeritageOfAll because “They place our people at the center, the most valuable asset of the University of Cauca, and express our gratitude for honoring this Alma Mater and for proudly carrying the University of Cauca’s blue and red. Furthermore, as they are awarded within the framework of 198 years of history, they evoke that the University has been built, generation after generation, thanks to people who, through knowledge, sports, culture, and research, transform lives.”

For the recognized students, the experience took on special value. Juan David Anacona, awarded for his achievements in world-category boxing, stated that this recognition was “very significant. Many times, being both an athlete and a student at the same time involves challenges that go unnoticed. But being recognized as a world boxing champion, both at the University and in different places, is a source of great pride. I continue striving and organizing my time between sports and studies, and being part of the University, sharing with the rector and the deans, motivates me to keep pushing forward.”

“I feel very happy, very pleased that precisely at this time when the 198th anniversary of the University is being commemorated, work that has been carried out for several years in the Faculty of Electronic Engineering and Telecommunications is being recognized. I am very happy to be able to contribute to the University’s continued growth and to demonstrate that this long trajectory is the result of the excellent academic quality we have with our students. For this to be recognized makes me very happy, and I feel very proud to belong to the University of Cauca,” expressed Professor Catalina Muñoz, visibly moved, who prepared the team for the Huawei ICT Competition.

Likewise, in a very special sphere, Manuel José Hurtado, recognized for his contribution to university sports, expressed his gratitude: “For me, it was not only a source of great joy, but also a great honor to receive this recognition from the institution that I have loved the most and that means the most to me in my life, which is the University of Cauca, since it is where I was educated and also where I was trained as an athlete. I had the opportunity to represent my University in national and international events, and also as a leader in university sports. This recognition not only generated a very positive experience in my life, but also in the life of my family, in my children, who saw the effort and dedication with which I devoted my life to the University being rewarded, because it was something that I believe I was also missing a little, since I served the institution with affection and loyalty. Many generations of students passed through my hands, to whom I believe I was able to provide guidance so that today they are outstanding professionals, above all honest, who are serving the country greatly and are a source of pride for the University.”

Thus, we deeply appreciate this collective harvest, the result of daily work, perseverance, and a commitment to public service, and to believing in this dream called University. Each recognition received is a sign that the path taken has been worthwhile and that the challenges embraced are translated into real opportunities for the community. With our sights set on 2026, the Institution prepares for new challenges, new sowings, and new flames that will continue to be ignited in this house of thought that is #HeritageOfAll and that, moving forward with its gaze set on the commemoration of its bicentennial, will continue transforming lives and making dreams come true. Here’s to a very prosperous new year that allows us to continue strengthening our pride as members of the University of Cauca community!
