A student of the Doctorate in Computer Science (FIET) achieves publication in Science of Computer Programming, one of the most recognized journals in the field

The research of Eydy Suárez Brieva, a PhD student in Computer Science at the University of Cauca, has been published in Science of Computer Programming, one of the most prestigious journals worldwide in the field, with a systematic review that paves the way for the study of social debt in software development and represents a significant advancement in her doctoral thesis, supervised by Professors César Jesús Pardo Calvache and Ricardo Pérez del Castillo.

The University of Cauca continues to consolidate its presence in international scientific arenas, this time thanks to the publication of advances from the doctoral thesis of student Eydy Suárez Brieva, titled “Adaptive model to manage the accumulation of social debt in agile software development teams.” The research is supervised by Ph.D. César Jesús Pardo Calvache, professor at the University of Cauca, in collaboration with Ph.D. Ricardo Pérez del Castillo, professor at the University of Castilla-La Mancha (Talavera de la Reina, Spain) and member of the ALARCOS Research Group.

The published article presents the results of the Systematic Literature Review “Social Debt in Software Development Environments: A Systematic Literature Review” in Science of Computer Programming, one of the most prominent international journals in the field of computing. This work is based on a rigorous and parameterized search across various scientific databases, which made it possible to identify the main sociotechnical factors associated with the generation and impact of social debt in software development teams.

Among the findings, the existence of a limited number of tools, mainly conceptual models and automated mechanisms, for the detection and management of social debt is evident, based on causes that affect both team well-being and organizational performance. Based on these results, the study highlights the need to further explore new causes and dynamics that enable the timely identification of social debt, as well as to develop effective strategies to mitigate its effects on the social and emotional well-being of software professionals.

Publications like this contribute solutions to an emerging and underexplored topic, positioning the researchers as pioneers in a line of work that prioritizes team well-being and promotes a more human and sustainable vision of software engineering. In this sense, the research underscores the importance of strengthening both technical competencies and soft skills, especially those related to communication, cooperation, and coordination. A lack of attention to these aspects can lead to consequences such as distrust, stress, staff turnover, and decreased productivity.

Therefore, the invitation is clear: to place human talent at the center as an essential component for the development of sustainable, high-quality technological projects. In this way, the University of Cauca reaffirms its commitment to research, academic excellence, and scientific production, training new generations of professionals capable of responding to the challenges of the contemporary technological environment.
