Throughout 2025, the University of Cauca has been weaving a green path with actions ranging from research groups and tree censuses to environmental awareness days. The recent planting is the culmination of a carefully planned stage, but far from being an ending, it is the starting point for an even greater goal: reaching 100 plantings in upcoming activities. This effort is framed within a broader vision that seeks to integrate sustainability into the University’s daily work, turning it into a benchmark and an example to follow in the region.
However, this process does not end with planting; it includes continuous care such as watering, staking, pruning, fertilization, and phytosanitary control, as well as an educational component that promotes the community’s appropriation of the space. In each activity, participants are taught about the importance of trees not only as aesthetic elements, but as key actors in ecological balance and in the benefits they provide us.
The day was filled with even greater enthusiasm thanks to the presence of Rector Deibar René Hurtado Herrera and Andrés Felipe Rivera, head of the Office of Planning and Institutional Development, who, together with the Operational Environmental Management team and the university community, joined efforts to strengthen the campus’s green corridors. “With this type of initiative, soils are restored, corridors for fauna are opened, and new generations are educated to care for and protect the campus; closing the year with a massive planting is a clear message: sustainability is a collective and ongoing task,” Rivera stated.
Although the day was full of laughter and meaningful conversations about the importance of environmental care, where stories were also shared about the legacy left to future generations, this activity became a space of unity, where each participant felt that their contribution, however small, added to a greater effort. Therefore, beyond symbolism, through this initiative we aim to achieve concrete positive impacts: improving air quality, providing shade and thermal comfort, offering shelter for local fauna, and regulating the water cycle. Each tree is recorded in an institutional database that will allow for rigorous scientific monitoring, ensuring that these new inhabitants of the University of Cauca spaces grow strong and healthy.
With the firm conviction that our actions transform lives, we invite each member of our university community and interested citizens to join these processes of restoration and care, since every tree planted represents not only a contribution to the biodiversity of our campuses, but also a gesture of responsibility toward the future. In our Alma Mater, we are certain that the trees planted today are the natural heritage and well-being of tomorrow, and that each planting day is an opportunity to come together, to recognize ourselves as members of the University of Cauca community, and to reaffirm our capacity to transform the environment through simple yet deeply meaningful actions. Thus, as the University prepares to celebrate its 200th anniversary, these new roots not only strengthen the soil, but also the spirit of an institution that understands that educating also means protecting and projecting a better, sustainable, and healthy tomorrow for future generations.
