Excellence, vocation, and social commitment that saves lives. The University of Cauca celebrates 75 years of one of its most iconic programs

The University of Cauca dressed in celebration to mark a transcendent milestone: the seventy-fifth anniversary of its Medicine Program. This commemoration went beyond formal ceremonies; it was an emotional gathering that brought together key administrators, faculty members, students, directors of affiliated hospitals, and a vast network of alumni, all united to honor the unwavering trajectory, educational quality, and profound social commitment that have defined this nearly bicentennial institution.

The commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Medicine Program at the University of Cauca served as a mirror of time, demonstrating that, beyond statistics and academic achievements, this program has left an indelible mark on the academic and professional lives of every individual who has passed through its halls. This legacy has enabled its graduates to establish themselves as pillars of healthcare in the region and the country, distinguished by rigorous clinical training grounded in strong humanistic principles. The Rector of the University of Cauca, Dr. Deibar René Hurtado Herrera, expressed the institutional sentiment with great pride: “Medicine is a profession that, in addition to saving lives, has a social and transformative character within the Alma Mater of Cauca.” In line with this vision, the anniversary month was marked by significant events, including a magnificent gala evening where tribute was paid to professors, administrators, and alumni whose work has been fundamental to public service and collective health.

The commitment to staying at the forefront was a central theme. Administrative and academic representatives recalled the program’s extensive history while keeping a clear focus on the future, emphasizing the need to maintain international-level standards. Carlos Alberto Muñoz, program coordinator, stated: “We have a 75-year trajectory of high-quality medical education,” detailing efforts in curriculum renewal and the strategic integration of simulation technology. For his part, Luis Carlos Ortiz, from the Colombian Association of Faculties of Medicine (ASCOFAME), validated this excellence externally by noting that “The University of Cauca has made a very important contribution to medical education,” highlighting the culture of quality that has ensured sustained accreditations over time.

The essential connection with the healthcare network was also celebrated. Hospital administrators highlighted the formative role and ethical commitment of students and alumni within their institutions. Lucy Jimena Ibarra, manager of the Susana López de Valencia Hospital, emphasized that “The doctors who come to our hospital are fundamental and carry out their work with excellence,” especially praising the humanistic vocation instilled in their training. Likewise, Juan Carlos Arteaga, manager of the San José University Hospital, called for continuity: “To continue maintaining quality in training,” and stressed the urgent need to expand and strengthen clinical rotations, aligning with the expansion of specialized services for the entire region.

In retrospect, the commemoration of this milestone in our institutional history has left a clear message: the Medicine Program of the University of Cauca not only honors its past, but also actively projects itself toward what lies ahead.
