In the framework of its Bicentennial, the University of Cauca launches academic amnesty so that students can resume their studies and graduate

The University of Cauca, recognized as #HeritageOfAll, will implement a temporary measure aimed at individuals who, between 2020-1 and 2025-2, saw their academic process interrupted, offering them the opportunity to re-enroll, resume their studies, and move forward toward obtaining their professional degree. As the bicentennial of the Alma Mater from Cauca approaches, this process becomes a meaningful way to continue making dreams come true and transforming lives.

As part of the commemoration of its 200 years of history, and thanks to an initiative promoted by the university administration in coordination with the student body, the Higher Council, through Higher Agreement 012 of 2026, approved an academic amnesty aimed at individuals who, due to various personal, economic, or social circumstances, were unable to complete their undergraduate studies and were left without the option to graduate. Thus, this measure seeks to reopen the doors to those who had to interrupt their educational path, recognizing that behind every unfinished story there are life projects that deserve a second chance, “This is a goal we set within the framework of our Institutional Development Plan, listening to the needs expressed by our students. It is a team effort with the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs to continue transforming lives and to keep understanding that the University is #HeritageOfAll,” said Rector Deibar René Hurtado Herrera, notably moved, as he announced this important news.

This is an amnesty that will allow applications for re-entry during the academic periods 2026-1, 2026-2, and 2027-1. Once the application is submitted, the University will carry out a detailed review of each applicant’s academic record and, exceptionally, may recognize completed courses that are equivalent to the current curriculum of the program. This means that many individuals will be able to resume their educational process without starting from scratch, rejoining a program that currently holds an active qualified registration and progressing toward the completion of their undergraduate degree.

However, it is important to note that due to possible curricular changes, such as modifications in credits, content, methodologies, or the nature of courses, some students may need to retake subjects previously passed. Even so, the measure represents significant relief, as it removes accumulated negative academic effects and allows for the reconstruction of the university trajectory based on what has already been achieved. The process will involve administrative costs equivalent to a first-semester application fee, which will be required for the corresponding academic evaluation.

This announcement represents a shared sense of joy, as the initiative applies to all undergraduate programs with an active qualified registration, provided that the applicant has not benefited from previous amnesties, has no disciplinary sanctions, has not failed more than 50% of the courses enrolled in their first semester nor withdrawn from that period, and is in good standing with our institution. Additionally, it is worth highlighting that a measure of this kind had not been adopted since 2019, which underscores its exceptional nature and its profound social purpose.

“It is focused on undergraduate students because we recognize that it is both pertinent and necessary to create conditions for those who, due to socioeconomic or personal circumstances, lost their opportunity to graduate, and who now, within the framework of the bicentennial, have options within reach, remembering that the most valuable heritage of the University of Cauca is its people,” stated Dr. Aída Patricia González Nieva, Academic Vice-Rector, who expressed her satisfaction at being part of this moment that offers a new opportunity to members of the University of Cauca community who continue to believe in the power of their goals.

With this decision, our house of studies reaffirms its commitment to inclusion, retention, and the transformation of lives through higher education, demonstrating that it is never too late to return, finish what was started, and turn postponed dreams into concrete achievements that impact families, the region, and the country.
