The University of Cauca participated in the renewal of the Agreement of Intent of the Collaborative Platform for the Recovery of the Upper Cauca River Basin, an initiative that brings together academic, institutional, and social actors around the protection and sustainable management of this strategic ecosystem in southwestern Colombia. In this way, our house of study continues to strengthen its presence in the territory, transcending boundaries and coordinating efforts with other institutions.

The formal signing ceremony took place on February 9 at the Palacio de San Francisco Building in Santiago de Cali, with the presence of the Rector of the University of Cauca, Deibar René Hurtado Herrera, and representatives of 37 entities committed to environmental sustainability. The renewal of this agreement reaffirms the institutional commitment to continue contributing from academia to environmental recovery processes, in line with the third strategic axis of the Institutional Development Plan, For a University that is supportive and committed to its environment.

In this regard, Dr. Deibar René Hurtado Herrera, Rector of the University of Cauca, stated: “For the University of Cauca, signing this Agreement of Intent means acting consistently with who we are: a public university that transforms lives because it works in response to the social reality of the territory. The Agreement seeks to coordinate efforts for the recovery and conservation of the upper Cauca River basin, and that purpose directly impacts our communities. We are not talking only about an ecosystem, but about living conditions, regional development, and sustainability for southwestern Colombia. Therefore, more than a signature, it is a concrete responsibility: to place our academic, research, and human capacities at the service of the region.”

In this context, the University of Cauca actively participates in the agreement of intent through its institutional mission and vision, integrating the various initiatives it develops in the Cauca River basin into this collaborative platform. Professor Juan Pablo Paz highlighted that, from the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and the Tull Research Group, the University supports community-based water management processes and collaborates with the National Rural Water Board, facilitating coordination with the Ministry of Environment and other entities for the benefit of rural communities. “The University of Cauca is part of this agreement of intent and, through its mission, vision, and the work carried out in the Cauca River basin, contributes to this collaborative platform,” stated the professor, noting that the agreement, initially signed under a previous administration, was renewed under Rector Deibar René Hurtado Herrera. It is worth mentioning that Professor Paz, widely recognized for his work in defense of water resources, was recently appointed by the President of Colombia as a representative to the Board of Directors of the Regional Autonomous Corporation of Cauca (CRC).

In this way, the University’s participation in this collaborative platform responds to a long-term vision that recognizes the upper Cauca River basin as an essential component for the environmental, social, and economic development of the region. Through research, teaching, and social outreach, this house that is #HeritageOfAll promotes processes focused on the comprehensive management of water resources, ecosystem conservation, and the strengthening of local capacities, contributing scientific and technical knowledge to inform decision-making.

The renewal of the Agreement of Intent also strengthens collaboration with other institutions and communities working toward environmental recovery in the territory, promoting the exchange of knowledge and the collective construction of sustainable solutions. In this way, the caucana Alma Mater reaffirms its commitment to protecting natural heritage and to territorial planning centered on water, reinforcing its role as a public university at the service of the region and the country.
