The Colombian Society of Engineers (SCI) and the Colombian Association of Engineering Faculties (ACOFI) presented to the country the IV National Showcase of Undergraduate Engineering Projects: Express Your Ingenuity. In this 2025 edition, 56 projects from across the national territory were selected in six categories, meeting criteria of innovation, applicability, and projection, based on the evaluation of abstracts, written papers, and videos submitted by participants.
In the Technologies 4.0 category, of the 21 projects admitted, four belonged to the Faculty of Electronic Engineering and Telecommunications: three from the Systems Engineering Program and one from Electronic Engineering and Telecommunications. In all of them, methodological rigor and the relevance of the proposals were highlighted, recognition that was reflected in the award granted to the project developed by students Laura Caicedo and Juan José Muñoz, from the Data Science Research Group, under the mentorship of Professor Néstor Díaz from the Computational Intelligence Research Group. Their proposal, titled Hybrid approach to mitigate university dropout: supervised learning and synthetic data generation, was consolidated as the winner of the category.
The other projects presented by the University of Cauca were: Evaluation of user experience in immersive educational virtual reality environments using eye tracking, by students Angie Gómez and María Fernanda Martínez (advisor: Sandra M. Roa, Computational Intelligence Research Group – GICO); Interactive environment to promote the Master’s in Computing at the University of Cauca, by students Edward Rivera and Nicolás Santander (advisor: Luz Marina Sierra, Information Technologies R&D Group – GTI); and Simulation tool for analyzing the performance of a LiFi communication system affected by interference, presented by Juan Fernando Jiménez and Wilson Sánchez (New Telecommunications Technologies Research Group – GNTT).
The showcase aimed to recognize the best projects developed by engineering students in the country upon completing their undergraduate studies, either as thesis work or as projects formulated within research groups. These initiatives represent high-value contributions to national development and are consolidated as spaces for articulation, visibility, and strengthening the impact of engineering in Colombia.
The University of Cauca recognizes and celebrates the academic excellence of the students who participated in this edition of Express Your Ingenuity. Their commitment, dedication, and contributions to knowledge generation reflect the quality of education at the institution and reinforce the leadership of the University of Cauca community in the field of engineering at the national level.
