Women who build University: a lifetime of passion and commitment in legal education

Because “It’s not a day, it’s not a month, it’s a lifetime,” the University of Cauca honors and celebrates the women who, with their dedication and daily effort, shape education and the future of the country. Thus, within the framework of this institutional campaign, which began four years ago, today the story of Professor Magda Beatriz Erazo, affiliated with the Faculty of Law, Political and Social Sciences, invites us to reflect on the strength of commitment and vocation in the education of new generations.

Last Sunday, March 8, the country commemorated International Women’s Day, a date that on this occasion coincided with an important national electoral day which, beyond the overlap, invites us to remember that women’s participation in public life has been the result of persistent struggles. For this reason, from the Alma Mater from Cauca, we join this reflection through the campaign “It’s not a day, it’s not a month, it’s a lifetime,” a special initiative that seeks to recognize those who, through their daily work, contribute not only to the growth of this nearly bicentennial institution, but also to the building of society.

Along this path emerges the story of a member of the University of Cauca community, Magda Beatriz Erazo, a woman who has made teaching her life project and who has recently reached a new milestone in her academic career. On February 24, she was appointed as a full-time professor after 19 years of uninterrupted work as a adjunct and occasional lecturer in the Law Program, a journey that reflects the perseverance with which many women have built their place in academia.

And although her journey began far from Popayán, it was always marked by a clear inclination toward the social sciences. “I was born in Santander de Quilichao, I finished high school in Cali, and I wanted to study Law at the most renowned Faculty in southwestern Colombia. In my family, only my maternal grandfather was a lawyer; I had no other references, but I always liked the social sciences. I had excellent professors during my undergraduate studies who instilled in me a passion for law; they were the inspiration for me to want to become a professor and to stay at my Alma Mater,” the professor recalls, connecting her personal story with the profound impact that only those who teach with vocation can leave.

Throughout her career, she has also strengthened her academic background with postgraduate studies, holding a Specialization in Financial Law, a Specialization in Commercial Law, and a Master’s degree in Business Law. These processes have accompanied her teaching practice and reflect a commitment to continuous updating, a commitment required by legal education in the current context. It also reminds us that, in order to remain relevant and address the needs of the lives impacted through law, there is one thing that must never be lost sight of: we never stop learning, and academia enriches worldviews in profound ways!

For Professor Magda, practicing teaching at the University of Cauca, a nearly bicentennial institution, represents a great honor, as educating future lawyers implies accompanying processes of critical thinking and adapting to generational changes. “Belonging to one of the most important and oldest faculties in the country and sharing with lawyers of great personal and academic qualities has been a true privilege, but also a great responsibility, because it requires maintaining constant academic growth and rethinking oneself as a teacher to face the challenges of generations who think and act differently,” she states, recognizing that teaching also implies learning; hence the magic of her role as an educator.

For nearly five years, she directed the Legal Office of our house of studies located in Popayán, a space she considers fundamental both for student training and for the bridges built between the University and society. There, legal knowledge connects with the everyday reality of people and becomes a tool to guarantee rights. “The Legal Office represents for students a space where they can refine the knowledge acquired in the classroom, but also where they become aware of the important role they are called to play in society. For the community of Popayán and Cauca, it means a professional yet friendly hand that helps resolve legal needs and make effective access to justice a reality,” she explains.

Stories like these also connect with the memory of the women who paved the way decades ago, as it was in 1954 when women’s suffrage was recognized in Colombia, an achievement in which lawyer and also a member of the University of Cauca community, Esmeralda Arboleda, played a fundamental role as a pioneer in the defense of women’s political rights and a reference of a struggle that has allowed today’s professors, students, and professionals to fully participate in academic, social, and legal settings. For this reason, when she reflects on those who are currently being educated in the classrooms of the Faculty of Law, Political and Social Sciences, the professor shares a message that summarizes her conviction about the transformative role of her beloved profession: “Do not be discouraged if you are told that there are too many lawyers in the country. Law today is versatile; every day it offers more fields of action, and the participation of a lawyer will always be necessary to ensure that the rights established in laws are not mere rhetoric but a reality.”

Thus, strong trajectories like that of Professor Magda Beatriz Erazo, built with passion and daily dedication, are a clear example of how the University is strengthened day after day through the commitment of those who teach, research, and support educational processes. For this reason, recognition of the #UnicaucaWomen cannot be limited to a date on the calendar; their contribution does not occur in just one day or one month, but throughout an entire life dedicated to transforming lives and making dreams come true.
