Between May 30 and June 1, a group of 25 students coordinated by professors Carlos Gallardo, Felipe Agredo, and Andrea Bolaños carried out a comprehensive technical visit to the department of Huila. During this experience, the students had the opportunity to learn about various hydraulic works and receive support from builders and related entities.
This visit made it possible to strengthen ties between academia, regional entities, and multinational companies responsible for developing engineering solutions. Additionally, it allowed students to become familiar with the work environment related to basic studies and detailed risk studies. Likewise, this experience enabled the direction of an elective course proposal (under evaluation by the Faculty Council of Civil Engineering) led by Professor Felipe Agredo from the Department of Hydraulics, which will focus on acquiring the skills to develop maps and models of geological hazards such as mass movements and floods, incorporating variability and climate change in uncontrolled basins with limited information.
It is important to mention that, with the purpose of preventing emergencies and reducing disaster risk in the rural and urban areas of Neiva, the Regional Autonomous Corporation of Alto Magdalena (CAM) built and put into operation three containment nets against debris flow in the middle and upper part of the Las Ceibas River basin. These large nets, made of high-strength steel, allow the dissipation of the flow’s energy and stop materials or debris carried by natural phenomena such as flash floods.
“The objective of the construction and installation of the nets in the Las Ceibas River is the retention of debris that is transported in the flash floods during sudden rises of the river, since the debris in these sudden rises makes up approximately 60% of the flow of the surge, and at the same time these dynamic barriers act as structural support and as a complement to the river channelling works in the urban area,” explained Javier Cardoso Gutiérrez, coordinator of the Ceibas Project at CAM.
Thus, this academic experience, in addition to strengthening ties between academia and the business sector, also allowed the students to learn firsthand about the different ways in which environmental risks can be prevented, a lesson that is undoubtedly highly relevant for the times we are living in, taking into account climate change and the challenges it presents to us.
For this reason, from this university of excellence and solidarity, we highlight the importance of carrying out this type of academic activity. Leaving the classrooms and experiencing these situations in a practical way significantly facilitates learning.
