The University of Cauca celebrated 197 years of a symphony dedicated to higher education

The Alma Mater of Cauca commemorated its 197 years with an event filled with symbolism and recognition. In this celebration, tribute was paid to its founders, the value of its community as its most precious heritage was exalted, and the exhibition “University of Cauca: Road to the Bicentennial” was inaugurated. In addition, the institution received a special gift: the updated sound of its anthem, one of its most emblematic symbols. The event took place on December 19 at the Francisco José de Caldas Great Hall and at the Mosquera House Museum.

The celebration of the 197th anniversary of the University of Cauca began with the singing of the National Anthem, a moment in which homage was paid to Francisco de Paula Santander and, subsequently, to Simón Bolívar, the founders of the institution. They were joined by the members of our Superior Council, led by its president, Dr. Rubén Darío Moreno Martínez, as well as by distinguished guests from other educational and governmental institutions.

During the tribute to Simón Bolívar, an amateur choir, carefully prepared in the days leading up to the event, performed the anthem of our Alma Mater with a renewed sound that incorporated traditional rhythms from the department of Cauca, such as marimba and chirimía.

This musical arrangement served as a tribute to the territory to which the University belongs, highlighting its commitment to the region and its ongoing work to contribute to building peace within its communities.

Thus, students, administrative staff, professors, alumni, and university leaders came together in this symbolic moment to collectively sing an anthem that has accompanied countless generations of graduates and that today resonates with the rhythms of our southwestern region.

Later, in the emblematic Paraninfo Francisco José de Caldas, Rector Deibar René Hurtado Herrera offered heartfelt welcoming remarks for the central ceremony.

In his speech, he emphasized with deep emotion the importance of the human symphony that gives life to the University of Cauca, composed of every student, professor, administrative staff member, and graduate who, with their uniqueness, create the singular melody that represents this institution.

“This interpretation does not imply that we all play at the same time, or that we play the same instruments, or the same score, nor even that we all play, because we can sing, we can conduct, we can arrange. A melody involves the combination of actions and emotions so that it sounds beautifully, just like this wonderful anthem that the University of Cauca has performed today.”

Undoubtedly, these words, together with the new sound of the anthem, will resonate in every corner of Cauca, evoking the fundamental role of the university community in building a more just and supportive society. Like a great orchestra, the Unicaucano spirit transcends borders, reaching not only the heart of Cauca but also every corner of the world, leaving an indelible mark of knowledge, culture, and commitment.

In this house of learning, people are the most valuable heritage, the soul that, day by day, drives the symphony that moves hearts and inspires efforts around higher education. For this reason, following the heartfelt words of Rector Deibar René Hurtado Herrera, a moment filled with gratitude and pride took place: recognitions were awarded to those who have dedicated more than 40 years of their lives to elevating this institution.

Furthermore, a heartfelt tribute was paid to the members of the university community who, from diverse areas, have proudly carried the blue and red colors of our Alma Mater, honoring its name and legacy. To conclude, academic excellence was highlighted through a tribute to the programs that received High-Quality Accreditation during the past year, as well as those that have completed 25 and 30 years of continuous work, positioning themselves as benchmarks. Without a doubt, this ceremony served as a reminder of the collective impact and the indelible marks that each person leaves in this great symphony called the University of Cauca.

After this emotional moment, which moved several attendees to tears, the celebration continued at the historic Casa Museo Mosquera. There, the exhibition “University of Cauca: Road to the Bicentennial” was inaugurated, an engaging timeline capturing the most significant milestones of this emblematic institution. This historical journey, rich in memory and pride, invites reflection on the legacy of nearly 200 years of commitment to education, culture, and progress, while bringing us closer to the dream of commemorating its Bicentennial.

Thus, on Thursday, November 19, the Alma Mater of Cauca filled Popayán’s historic district with life and emotion, resonating with the symphony of its people. Indeed, the 197 years of this institution, which, through higher education, transforms lives, makes dreams come true, and stands as a shared heritage, could be celebrated no less. This anniversary is not only a reminder of the important legacy its work represents for southwestern Colombia and the country, but also a symbol of the commitment to a future full of hope and opportunities for generations to come.
