University of Cauca and University of the Amazon: a commitment to strengthening ties among public universities in southern Colombia

With the purpose of strengthening academic ties and opening pathways toward peacebuilding in the south of the country, students from the Bachelor’s Degree Program in Social Sciences at the University of the Amazon visited Cauca between September 22 and 26, in an academic and cultural exchange in which the University of Cauca, through its Philosophy Program, served as host.

Between September 22 and 26, an academic delegation of students from the Bachelor’s Degree Program in Social Sciences at the University of the Amazonia visited part of the territory of Cauca, and the Philosophy program of the University of Cauca served as host for two days. This made it possible to strengthen academic ties, project joint research processes, and promote regional mobility initiatives aimed at reinforcing connections among public universities in southern Colombia.

During their visit, the future teachers from Florencia (Caquetá), accompanied by Professors Jarinson Javier Laverde Giraldo and Hugo Rincón, toured various tourist, pedagogical, academic, and cultural sites in Puracé-Coconuco, Popayán, and El Tambo. This further nurtured the growing understanding of the Cauca territory as one committed to peacebuilding and as a potential setting for continuing to consolidate the pedagogical visits led by Professor Laverde from the University of the Amazonia.

During their time at the University of Cauca, the University of the Amazonia students participated in a workshop entitled “Deconstructing the Imaginaries of Cauca and Caquetá,” a space led by Professor Pedro Silva from the Department of Philosophy. This allowed members of the University of Cauca community to present their philosophical reflections on how to understand territory, how to commit to peacebuilding, and to emphasize the need to overcome stereotypical narratives surrounding Cauca and violence.

Likewise, Professor José Rafael Rosero Morales, faculty member of the Department of Philosophy, shared with the University of the Amazonia delegation an academic session entitled “Education as Intercultural Agency,” an encounter that made it possible to bring together formative interests related to the philosophy of education and intercultural philosophy, integrating the perspectives of the students of the University of Cauca with the pedagogical expectations of our visiting students.

After days of exchanging perspectives and strengthening critical horizons, the future graduates, accompanied by their professors, visited both the Natural History Museum and the Historical Archives of the University of Cauca. This provided an opportunity to showcase how the University of Cauca is committed to sustaining and fostering research in the biological, anthropological, and historical fields.

Finally, this visit makes it possible to envision future encounters organized through national mobility initiatives, which encourage academic exchange and position southern Colombia as a space for dialogue, critical reflection, and socio-humanistic thought,” stated Professor Yerson Y. Carrillo Ardila of the Department of Philosophy, who, together with Professor Laverde from the University of the Amazonia, designed the activities for the exchange.
