The Historical Research Center “José María Arboleda Llorente” of the University of Cauca was selected as one of the winners of the National Incentives Program Portfolio 2025, in the category Recognition of successful projects, strategies, or actions for the protection of movable cultural heritage, according to Resolution 1915 issued by the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Knowledge of Colombia, an achievement that reaffirms the institution’s commitment to the conservation, research, and dissemination of Colombia’s documentary heritage.
For the University of Cauca, this recognition is a source of pride, considering the role of its Historical Archive as one of the most important collections in the country. It is regarded as the second most significant historical archive in Colombia, after the General Archive of the Nation of Colombia, and the most prominent among university and regional archives, as this collection safeguards unique pieces, including the oldest manuscript preserved in the national territory, protected by the institution for nearly a century.
In this regard, Beatriz Quintero, director of the Historical Archive, expressed the importance of the recognition: “This recognition represents great satisfaction for us, as it demonstrates the commitment of the University in general, and of the Historical Archive in particular, to safeguard, preserve, and provide access to the documentary heritage under our care. It is also a great motivation to continue the daily work we carry out in support of the historical memory of Colombians, represented in the nine collections we oversee.”
Thus, to achieve this recognition, the application process included evidence of the actions carried out in recent years to strengthen the preservation of the documentary collection. Among these, improvements in the thermo-environmental conditions of each repository stand out, along with the acquisition of specialized digitization equipment for documents of heritage value, and the provision of appropriate furniture and storage materials for cultural assets. Likewise, the incorporation of professionals specialized in conservation was highlighted, as well as outreach strategies aimed at the university community, the general public, and ethnic groups.
The Historical Archive also presented previous recognitions granted by the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Knowledge of Colombia and UNESCO, institutions that have included several of its collections in declarations of cultural heritage at both national and international levels. Added to this is progress in cataloging unpublished material, which made it possible to incorporate nearly thirty thousand documents in the last year, facilitating new lines of research on regional and national history and providing tools for processes of memory and reparation for ethnic communities affected by events between the 16th and 19th centuries.
Looking ahead, the Archive plans the full digitization of its collections and immediate remote access to them. “We are working with the ICT area and the Planning Office so that in the near future this becomes a reality,” added the Archive’s director.
Thus, the University of Cauca demonstrates that it is not only a higher education institution that transforms lives and makes dreams come true, but also that, throughout its 198 years, it has significantly contributed to the protection of cultural heritage by safeguarding the historical memory of the country.
