The academic trajectory of Dr. Harold Mosquera Rivas is a testament to his thirst for knowledge and his commitment to excellence. A graduate as an Electronic Engineer from this Alma Mater in 1987, he soon expanded his horizons by earning a Law degree in 1991. Throughout his career, Professor Mosquera never stopped pursuing further education, achieving multiple specializations that established him as an authority in his field: a Specialization in Labor Law and Industrial Relations from the Universidad Externado de Colombia (1994), as well as in Administrative Law (2004) and Social Security Law (2008) from the University of Cauca and the Universidad San Buenaventura. His academic training culminated with a Master’s degree in Labor Law and Social Security from the University of Barcelona (2005–2006) and another in Constitutional Law from the Universidad Libre de Cali, in addition to undertaking doctoral studies in Law. This impressive résumé is not merely a list of degrees, but the reflection of a life devoted to study, research, and teaching, leaving an indelible mark on the Faculty of Law, Political and Social Sciences and on countless generations of professionals. He also served as Head of the Department of Labor Law and has enriched the national legal debate through his writings, research, and opinion columns. More recently, he has stood out as a salsa composer, creating pieces such as “Un amor en Popayán,” a song of gratitude to the city that welcomed him, and “Gracias a Dios,” which tells the story of a young man who moves forward thanks to God and Public Education.
Beyond the classrooms and the courtrooms, the imprint of Professor Harold Mosquera Rivas resonates with particular strength in his tireless support for workers and his defense of human rights. Recognized in southwestern Colombia as an authority in labor law, his professional practice was always guided by the deep conviction that justice must be an accessible reality for all, especially for those who have historically been the most vulnerable. His commitment to the Afro-Colombian population and his firm stance against exclusion and racism have made him a reference figure and a true defender of equality. His voice, always clear and well-founded, has been a beacon for those who seek equity and recognition.
Thus, with this context always present, his commitment to educational processes, through his teaching practice, has been nourished by a profound social sense, accompanying the training of future law students of the University of Cauca, instilling critical awareness and ethical guidelines, always ready to champion just causes. For Professor Harold Mosquera, “Every day one learns; no matter how much knowledge one accumulates, each day, in every class, with each group of students or with each union, something appears that one did not know, and the humblest worker ends up teaching the doctoral professor,” he stated, notably moved.
And since nothing is better than getting to know a human being from their most vulnerable side, Sara María Mosquera Hernández, daughter of Professor Harold and a student of our caucana Alma Mater, took this opportunity to express the pride she feels for her father: “My dad managed to influence young people not only to be good professionals, good lawyers, but also to be good human beings. Through his actions, he showed the way we can help, the way we can impact the lives of others by being generous, kind, and loving; that is the legacy my dad leaves at the University, and that is why we feel very proud,” she stated, moved, and she also sent a message to her father in this new stage of life he is beginning: “My dad is a man full of ideas, a man who cannot stay still, so we hope he has plenty of time to do the things he enjoys, to write more songs, to learn more poems, to share with the people he loves, to laugh a lot, which is something he truly enjoys. We know that for him it is sad to leave the University, he cares deeply for it, but I also know that he has many plans ahead.”
Thus, as we bid farewell to Professor Harold Mosquera Rivas from his professional stage as a member of our faculty body, the University of Cauca not only celebrates his trajectory and his invaluable contribution to legal science, but also welcomes him into this new phase of his life. His dedication has been a cornerstone in strengthening the Faculty of Law, Political and Social Sciences, the oldest of this house that is #HeritageOfAll, enriching the mission of our Alma Mater. From today on, Professor Mosquera joins the select group of alumni and teachers who, from different horizons, will continue to be a source of pride for our Institution. The University wishes him a path full of fulfillment and well-being, and hopes to continue counting on his wisdom and counsel in the future. May this new chapter allow him to joyfully reap the seeds of justice and knowledge that he sowed with such dedication, and may his legacy continue to illuminate the path of future generations.
