Communities of La Yunga and Unicauca’s Tourism Program join forces to promote sustainable rural tourism

The WWB Colombia Foundation, in collaboration with students from the Tourism program’s research groups (SITA) and members of the community of the La Yunga district in the municipality of Popayán, carried out the project “Rural Tourism Planning for the villages of La Yunga, El Tablón, and Río Hondo in the city of Popayán, Cauca.”

This project aimed to carry out the first phase of the planning process to promote rural, sustainable, and responsible tourism in the region.

Through participatory workshops, the local community was able to engage in a territorial assessment, identifying the resources that hold tourism potential for the area. Both natural and cultural resources, along with traditional ways of life and productive activities, became key attractions for the development of four possible tourist routes that connect the three villages, while also presenting a challenge for collaborative work among their inhabitants.

As part of this process, workshop participants completed the course titled “Tourism Planning in Rural Areas,” which was certified on August 31 by the Center for Open and Continuing Education (CECAV). This event also marked the official closing of the project and provided an opportunity to share the results of the planning process.

This project establishes an alliance between the local communities and the Tourism Program of the University of Cauca to continue working toward responsible tourism.
