On August 27, 2025, at the community hall of the village of San Rafael, the official handover of the 1-kilometer pilot section of the CDT Vial Project took place, marking a milestone for rural infrastructure in Cauca.

The section, located between the villages of San Rafael – Morinda – Santa Rosa – La Tetilla – La Meseta, in the rural area of Popayán, was built using sustainable and innovative technologies:

  • Geocells for soil reinforcement.
  • Ecobase with C&D waste, a granular base made from construction and demolition debris.
  • Surface treatment with recycled rubber granules.

Its purpose is to evaluate, under real conditions, the technical, environmental, and economic performance of non-conventional materials, in order to generate replicable models that optimize resources, reduce maintenance costs, and strengthen rural connectivity with lower-cost solutions compared to traditional systems.

The event was attended by members of the beneficiary rural communities, the citizen oversight committee, and representatives from academia, industry, and public institutions. Authorities such as Dr. Aída Patricia González Nieva (Acting Rector of the Universidad del Cauca – University of Cauca), Dr. Juan Carlos Casas (Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering), and Eng. Jaime Rafael Obando (Director of the Cauca Road Technological Development Center – CDT Vial), together with delegates from construction and project supervision firms, highlighted the impact of this achievement for the department.

This project, carried out by the University of Cauca and the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, with funding from the Sistema General de Regalías (General Royalties System), constitutes a living laboratory of innovation and sustainability that transforms roads into opportunities.

A firm step toward more resilient, cost-effective, and sustainable rural roads that improve the lives of communities and can be replicated in other territories across the country.
