From Cauca to Greece: University of Cauca Professor connects with cutting-edge tourism strategies

Tourism in Greece, a global benchmark in this sector, opened its doors to Colombian innovation. Professor Mauricio Andrés Manrique, from the Department of Tourism at The University of Cauca, became one of the 10 Colombians selected for a unique immersion experience in Larissa, thanks to an Erasmus Programme scholarship. His mission: to uncover the keys to success in modern tourism management, from inclusive tourism to digital marketing, in order to bring that knowledge back to our country and, in turn, to our region.

Professor Mauricio Andrés Manrique was selected, along with a group of nine other Colombians, to take part in a Job Shadowing program in Larissa, Greece. As the result of a scholarship awarded by the Fundación Erasmus, this program allows professionals and academics to closely follow the day-to-day work of foreign institutions in order to exchange knowledge, strengthen international networks, and acquire best practices in their field of action. The experience, which took place from June 20 to June 30, 2025, represented a unique opportunity to deepen expertise in key areas such as Inclusive Tourism, Digital Marketing for Tourism, and Sustainable Tourism. According to Professor Manrique, “This scholarship and the experience gained represent an important professional achievement and a valuable contribution to the Department of Tourism, which will undoubtedly be reflected in future academic and research initiatives.”

The selection process was highly competitive, since out of numerous applications, 50 candidates were admitted to the courses, and only the 10 with the highest scores on the final evaluations,  among them Professor Manrique, received the scholarship. The selection, which consisted of three rigorous stages, included a résumé evaluation, a technical interview in English focused on inclusive tourism, as well as the achievement of high grade averages in the courses delivered by the Instituto eCommerce.

During his stay in Greece, this member of the University of Cauca community had the opportunity to participate in various academic activities that allowed him to analyze practical cases and gain first-hand knowledge of tourism management strategies in that country, a benchmark in the tourism sector. Among the most notable experiences were visits to Meteora, the second most visited site in Greece after the Acropolis, and to the Island of Skiathos, two emblematic destinations that enriched his learning and broadened his perspective on sustainable and inclusive tourism.

From the University of Cauca, we express our deep pride in Professor Mauricio Andrés Manrique and in all the professors who, through their commitment, talent, and vocation, take part in international experiences that enrich academic work and inspire social transformation. These experiences not only strengthen the processes of education, research, and outreach, but also reflect the power of public education to transform lives, open pathways, and make the dreams of those who believe in knowledge as a driver of change come true. Thank you to our professors for dreaming big and working to make those dreams a reality: there is no better way to educate than by example! And yes, transcending borders opens the mind in unimaginable ways.
