The University of Cauca took a very important step in fulfillment of its internationalization strategy. A high-level delegation, led by Rector Deibar René Hurtado Herrera, traveled to Mexico to forge strategic alliances with leading universities, opening the door to a world of academic and cultural opportunities for its entire community.

At the end of August, the University of Cauca deployed an academic commission to Mexico, consolidating its firm commitment to international cooperation. The main objective: to strengthen ties and forge new alliances with highly renowned institutions in Latin America. The delegation, led by Rector Deibar René Hurtado Herrera, included the valuable participation of Dr. Francisco José Pino, Vice President for Research; Master Pedro Aníbal Yanza, Vice President for Culture and Well-Being; and Master María Alejandra Rivera, Head of the Office of Interinstitutional and International Relations (ORII).

Thanks to the Rector’s vision and the leadership of the Office of Interinstitutional and International Relations (ORII), the agenda was intense and fruitful. Key meetings were held with academic authorities from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), College of Mexico (COLMEX), Ibero-American University, Autonomous University of Chapingo, and University of Guadalajara. This ambitious itinerary was made possible thanks to the invaluable support of the Embassy of Colombia in Mexico, which facilitated institutional coordination and entry into the country.

The visit yielded significant results that are also consolidated as meaningful advances: agreements were signed with the College of Mexico and the Ibero-American University, the historic agreement with the National Autonomous University of Mexico (in force since 1991) was updated, a new pact with the Autonomous University of Chapingo was formalized, and an agreement with the University of Guadalajara was promoted. These agreements are crucial to strengthening areas such as student and faculty mobility, joint research, virtual education, the digitalization of processes, and cultural exchange.

“Each agreement signed in Mexico is the expression of our commitment to a University that transforms lives and projects itself to the world with its own identity. From the second strategic axis of our Institutional Development Plan: education that generates potential and opportunities, we reaffirm that internationalization is not only an objective, but a responsibility to our students and professors, so that they may experience academic, cultural, and human exchanges that broaden their horizons and strengthen their commitment to Cauca and to Colombia. In this way, we move forward on the road to the Bicentennial, consolidating ourselves as Heritage of All,” stated Dr. Deibar René Hurtado firmly.

The meeting not only enabled the signing of agreements, but also served as a showcase to present to the Mexican academic community the innovative processes led by the University of Cauca, as well as the cultural and social richness of our department. The visit became a key setting to highlight the experiences of students and professors in mobility programs and to open new avenues for academic cooperation. In this regard, María Alejandra Rivera, Head of the ORII, shared that: “What we seek is not only for them to have an academic experience. It is about a life experience; it is about fulfilling dreams, discovering, having the opportunity to truly make their lives a wonderful experience in which they gain academic knowledge and also meet people, cultures, and gastronomy. So, the message to the entire university community is that they learn about all these initiatives that are being developed, that they explore and have the opportunity to travel, study, learn, and conduct research in other countries, in other places where social and cultural dynamics are different.”

This academic commission to Mexico is, without a doubt, a firm step in consolidating internationalization as a central axis of the Institutional Development Plan 2023–2027. Thanks to these actions, greater benefits are projected in terms of education, research, outreach, and an enriching intercultural dialogue for The members of the University of Cauca.

With this effort, The Alma Mater of Cauca reaffirms its commitment to transforming lives, making its students’ dreams come true, and consolidating itself as an institution open to the world, innovative and supportive because yes, at UNICAUCA, you make your dream of academic and cultural exchange come true: an experience that transforms lives!
