Guapi will be home to the new University of Cauca campus: a dream come true for the Pacific region of Cauca

On Monday, May 19, 2025, in the municipality of Guapi, representatives of the Ministry of National Education, the local government, and senior officials of the University of Cauca took important steps forward in the ambitious project that will enable the construction of a university campus in the Pacific region. The initiative seeks to settle a historic debt with the municipality and with the entire Pacific coast of Cauca, ensuring access to higher education for its communities.

But the path toward this major objective has not been easy. For more than two years, a rigorous process was undertaken to identify the most suitable site. Fifteen properties were evaluated and, following a detailed technical study, it was determined that a three-hectare lot located at the Normal Superior La Inmaculada Educational Institution met all the necessary conditions to house the future campus.

“They asked us to contribute and help make the dream of accessing higher education for our young people a reality. Today, thanks to the coming together of so many people who have taken part in this process, we are achieving it. So we are setting out on this path and continuing with all the activities required so that we can enjoy and inaugurate this new campus as soon as possible,” said Deibar René Hurtado Herrera, rector of the University of Cauca, moved to be able to share this good news. For his part, Ricardo Monero, Vice Minister of Education and Acting Minister of Education, noted that “We are delivering on our commitment to public higher education, strengthening our university, but above all, fulfilling the responsibility that public universities have to be present in the territories where they are most needed.”

Thus, the Guapi Mayor’s Office will move forward this Friday with the presentation of a draft agreement before the Municipal Council to formalize the transfer of the land, while the Ministry of National Education will provide the resources for the studies and architectural designs of the new facility. For its part, the University of Cauca will implement the “University in the Classroom” program, through which academic programs will be offered immediately, while construction of the new campus moves forward.

Without a doubt, this project will not only benefit the population of Guapi, but also communities in neighboring municipalities such as Timbiquí and López de Micay (Cauca), as well as other localities along the Pacific coast of the department of Nariño. Its impact will be profound and transformative: it will expand educational opportunities, reduce social gaps, and make a significant contribution to building a more dignified future for hundreds of young people in the region.

The news has been received with deep enthusiasm and renewed hope by the inhabitants of the area, who see in this announcement a collective dream, as the arrival of the University of Cauca to the Pacific not only marks a historic milestone, but also symbolizes a genuine commitment to territorial equity, inclusion, and social transformation. It is an act of recognition and dignity for a territory that has endured neglect, and that now opens its doors to knowledge as a powerful tool to build peace, strengthen identities, and chart paths toward a tomorrow with more opportunities for all, everyone, and everyone in between. In this way, the Alma Mater of Cauca, an almost bicentennial institution and one that is #HeritageOfAll, reaffirms its mission to transform lives and make dreams come true, now from and for the Pacific region of Cauca.
