Interesting participation from Unicauca in one of the most important telecommunications and informatics events

Professors and students from the Faculty of Electronic Engineering and Telecommunications of our Alma Mater actively participated in the 17th edition of the IEEE Colombian Conference on Communications and Computing – COLCOM 2024, which took place at Universidad del Norte this past August.

A delegation of students from the Faculty of Electronic Engineering and Telecommunications, together with professors Víctor Manuel Quintero and Oscar Caicedo, had the opportunity to participate in IEEE – COLCOM 2024, the most prominent event in the field of communications and computing, a gathering whose main purpose is to share advances and state-of-the-art developments in various areas from academic, scientific, and industrial perspectives. In this edition, the focus was on the topic beyond 6G and its enabling technologies in modern society, something that undoubtedly sparked deep reflections on the work carried out in this professional field.

During this knowledge-exchange event, the University of Cauca presented the talk titled “Propagation Models for VHF Conventional Land Mobile Radio Systems in Cauca and Valle del Cauca, Colombia,” in which a mathematical model based on measurements of mobile radiocommunication systems was shared. This model was designed to estimate signal attenuation in both urban and rural scenarios, using Popayán and various areas of the southwestern region of the country as a case study. This work, the result of research funded by the National Spectrum Agency (ANE), was carried out in 2023 thanks to the teamwork of professors Víctor Manuel Quintero, Claudia Milena Hernández Bonilla, and Diego Fernando Galvis Calambás from the University of Cauca, with the support of Alfonso Bahillo Martínez and Carmen Marín Gallo from the University of Valladolid.

Additionally, the article “Body Shadowing in an Indoor Positioning System Based on UWB” was presented, containing experimental results on how the presence of the human body influences the accuracy of an indoor positioning system using UWB technology. The authors are the very talented Unicaucano students Nathalia Isabel Guerrero López and Yohan Santiago Yangana Montoya, along with professor Víctor Manuel Quintero.

And as if that were not enough, Fabián Alexander Pérez Jiménez and Mauricio Peña Bambague additionally presented the study titled “Performance Analysis of a Location System Based on the Direction of Arrival of the Radio Signal,” which addresses a localization system using Bluetooth technology. By estimating the direction of arrival of the radio signal, this system enables the precise location of mobile devices in indoor environments. The inclusion of this case study concluded on a high note thanks to the presentation of an article under the direction of professor Oscar Caicedo, a work carried out by future engineers Angela Isabel Becerra Muñoz, Juan Felipe Chaves Tibaduiza, and Ángel Robledo Girón.

“It was very important to present the results of undergraduate thesis projects at one of the most significant electronic communications conferences in Colombia, as it allows us to see the work of other institutions at the national and Latin American levels, and to realize that at the University of Cauca very good work is being done work that is recognized by members of the national scientific community, given that the students received verbal congratulations for their projects,” said professor Víctor Quintero, Electronic Engineer from the University of Cauca, Master in Electronics and Telecommunications from the Alma Mater caucana, Doctor in Electrical Engineering from the Université de Lyon (France), and who currently serves as a professor in the Department of Telecommunications and Coordinator of the Radio and Wireless Group (GRIAL).

Thus, at the University of Cauca we proudly celebrate that our people bring honor to the name of our institution. On this occasion, we do so through research, one of our fundamental pillars, a pillar we continue to strengthen with the commitment to contribute to building a more just and equitable society. Our constant effort not only drives the development of knowledge but also seeks to improve people’s quality of life, promoting social well-being and sustainable progress.
